>>>Well an American would still be amazed by Blenheim Palace<<<

If I had written this, I would have been accused of Anti-Americanism.

Mrs_Wilde Aug 15th, 2009 05:50 AM

Well, I am American and I was amazed by Blenheim Palace - amazed at the vulgarity of it all.

Please, please go to Oxford.

CW, what your great auntie did, she did for England. She also died a rather gruesome death after throwing over your great uncle George, so her past did finally catch up with her.

Enjoyed your 25th anniv. trip photos Lee Ann. Hope we have as much luck with the weather as you did! Will go to Oxford after reading all this.

lifetrip Aug 15th, 2009 01:10 PM

Oh THANKS all.

Palenque Aug 15th, 2009 07:22 PM

nevcha - janisj no doubt castigates you for only cutting and pasting, bt i think it very well done -spot on as the English say! Giving links is i think often better than one spieling on their own opinions about a place - like i do - give my own views and then for a more proper objective look plus all the details the link is excellent. Though Janis, who has on innerable posts of mine, has reprimanded me rather strongly for doing the same ('only cut and pasting her opinion, will no doubt disapprove, but i say good info.

Thank you, lifetrip! We're starting to think about another trip to the UK.

>>Well an American would still be amazed by Blenheim Palace<<it should say the typical American tourist would be amazed by Blenheim Palace - not all American tourists - but the overwhelming number of.

traveller1959 Aug 17th, 2009 12:30 AM

This thread contains some interesting words which have been attributed to Blenheim Palace:

appalled, vulgarity, Britain's Worst Building, Flatulence, dump, pollutes the landscape, the Monster, the Abortion, ostentation, bit of yawn, giant pile of kitsch...

Together, they make a picture.

Any more?

Palenque Aug 17th, 2009 05:50 AM

yup t 1959 - makes me want to go back and see what i obviously missed!

Josser Aug 18th, 2009 12:25 AM

I thought that it was Great-Uncle George who did the dumping.
BTW what is a member of the Wheatsimpson-East family doing pounding the beat?

Cholmondley_Warner Aug 18th, 2009 01:46 AM

I thought that it was Great-Uncle George who did the dumping.>>>>

'twas indeed. He dumped her for Mrs Patrick Campbell. aka Auntie Stella.

Here she is acting:

He was a famous shagger but he seemed to have a thing for MILFs. Runs in the family it would seem.

BTW what is a member of the Wheatsimpson-East family doing pounding the beat?>>>>

I don't exactly "pound the beat" but the alternative would be to be in trade and that would never do would it?

How does my family make a small fortune? Start with a large one and let peeps like Uncle George loose on it.

MissPrism Aug 18th, 2009 01:56 AM

I don't blame Uncle George.
Mrs Pat. sounds great fun.
My favourite story about her is,
Gushing female: When I'm down in the dumps, I get myself a new hat.
Mrs Pat, sweetly: Oh I've always wondered where you got them

bookchick Aug 18th, 2009 02:01 AM

Also reminds me of this:

"What do you call a male slut?"
"I think you just call him 'a guy'".
Methinks there was a lot o' extramarital shagging going on in the George & Jennie union, and perhaps that's what caused them to pack it in. Eventually we got the rest of CW's family out of it, so it's all good.

Auntie Stella is also the bint the coined the phrase "I don't care what they do, just so long as they don't do it in the street and frighten the horses".

Also the part of Eliza Doolitle was written for her (she was about 50 at the time. Who says there are no parts for older wimmins.)

CW - Has interesting ancestors. Is letting the side down massively.

bookchick Aug 18th, 2009 03:36 AM

Yes, but you're not letting us down, CW! Also, Pygmalion doesn't have the "happy ending" we saw in "My Fair Lady", as Eliza does throw over Prof. Higgins for Freddy Hill.

I haven't the foggiest about these peeps. They all popped their respective clogs before I was born.

I do like the Sound of Uncle George though - and his sis (my auntie Daisy) was Daisy, Princess of Pless.

I love the clash between the rather sweet name "Daisy" and "princess of Pless". Who sounds like something out of a Pratchet book.

I don't even know where Pless is. I'm certainly not Prince of it. Maybe I am? Perhaps I should check?

The other one was Duchess of Westminster. They never send money either. Bastards.

CW - posh. Very posh, if truth be told.

Not if you go to Basra!
