Black Forest
 

I am looking for some suggestions for a hotel in Baden Baden and in Freiburg and any special sights along the way, will be there for 5 days. Thank you fro your time

The train ride from Freiburg up thru the Black Forest to the Titisee is fantastic - large lake to walk around - very popular thing to do.

I'd suggest that you stay in one of the villages listed on this page instead and then visit Freiburg and Baden-Baden on daytrips by train. The scenic train rides will then be FREE:

We recently stayed in Staufen, a lovely little village just a short drive from Freiburg. We did as Russ suggested and did Freiburg as a daytrip but with a car.

A couple of years ago, we spent several days in Gengenbach, another great little place with lots of charm.

Betty - Is there a train stop at Gengenbach?

I stayed here in Baden Baden. Very nice and very clean. Good breakfast, garage parking. Located right in the center of town.

I'm not Betty but I can answer the question. Gengenbach does have a station. We stayed there in the Hotel Benz and enjoyed it so much we went back the next year.
We went walking above Gengenbach and also moved on to Titisee and Meersburg and visited Freudenstad and Freiburg and Tubingen. These journeys were in October and February respectively and it was lovely to travel at another time of year.

Thanks, Frances. I knew there was train service and bus service which is covered by the Konus card but we had a car.

We stayed at the family owned Hotel Sonne which is in a great location and very reasonably priced.

I second Gengenbach as a hidden gem. There is a lot of history, architecture and beautiful scenery to be found here. We stayed 2 km outside of Gengenbach at the wonderful Gasthof Hirsch in Berghaupten--fantastic cuisine!

Don't forget to visit the Thermal Baths and the Casino (early morning guided tours are recommended if you don't like to gamble - evening dresscode is tie and jacket)

I have stayed at Hotel Alleehaus in Freiburg twice now and really like it. http://www.hotel-alleehaus.de/ It's in a nice quiet area of town, the rooms are large (well, at least mine have been anyway) and clean, and the staff friendly.

I second PalenQ's idea about taking the train to Titisee, it's a beautiful area. My German friend who lives in Frieburg took me hiking in the Hinterzarten area and then we ended the day at Titisee, where we had schwarzwälder kirschtorte at Hotel Alemannenhof and then took a boat ride on the lake.

In Freiburg they also have really a really nice bike path out along the Dreisam River, so renting a bike is a fun idea too.

Also you can easily take the bus across into France and visit Colmar for a nice day trip. Such a cute little town! I have also done Basel, Switzerland as a day trip from Freiburg on the train, which was easy and an interesting day.

Anyway I haven't been to Baden-Baden (only through it on the train) so I can't comment there but I really like Freiburg, it's a college town so it feels vibrant, it has a lovely munster, it's surrounded by the Black Forest, and has loads of daytrip opportunities!

My daughter studied in Freiburg her junior year of college and returned to work as an au pair last year. We have been there three times and just love the area. In Freiburg we stayed at the Konzerthaus Novotel. It is a clean, modern hotel with a nice restaurant for breakfast. It is just across the street from the Bahnhof so it is perfect for coming and going. It is about a 6 block walk to the old city center and Munsterplatz. We took day trips to Strasbourg, Colmar, Titisee, Gengenbach, and Heidelberg. I esp. recommend Strasbourg!! We also tried the Eugen Keidel Bad just outside Freiburg. The Augustinermuseum is excellent and the Stadtmuseum is small but good. We like Martinsbrau and Feirling for local beers. My favorite restaurant on our last visit was the Ganter bier restaurant directly opposite the Munster. We took a one night trip to Baden Baden and thoroughly enjoyed the area and the Bad. We stayed at Der Kleine Prinz hotel; clean and charming.

Oh yes, Strasbourg is also fabulous, I second that as well! I didn't do it as a daytrip from Freiburg but visited on another trip (I came from Paris) and actually met my friend from Freiburg in Strasbourg instead. It was winter, it was FREEZING cold, but I really enjoyed Strasbourg a lot and I bet it would be lovely at another time of year. I got lost a lot there though I remember, not sure why...maybe my hands were too frozen to unfold the map!
