Black Forest
I'll be visiting the Alsace starting May 17th-26th and will be staying in Riquewehr, France. It is very centrally located and I was looking to visit the Balck Forest during my stay. A one day jaunt over the Rhine and I was wondering, if you had ONE place to visit for a day, where would you go?

Freiburg is lovely, but there's also a beautiful little town not far from Freiburg called Staufen. One of the hotels claims that room 15 or room 5 (I forget which) is the room from which Mephistopheles snatched Faust and took him to hell. They've even got a picture of the event painted on the side of the building.
Anyway, it's a really pretty little town.

We stayed in Staufen a couple of years ago and did a side trip to Freiburg. We enjoyed both places very much.

Staufen with its wine cafes, castle ruins above town, multiple cheese shops and Schapps distillery outlet OR Gengenbach, often called the Rothenburg for Germans (Its charms are not well known to Americans).
Gengenbach has a multitude of half-timbered houses, a lovely town square, A yummy flat style of pizza, many wine cafes and a small tower housing the costumes of Fastnacht through the ages, in addition to St. Jacob's chapel above town with views over the vineyards of the area. A bigger town than Staufen, you couldn't lose with either.
