Birmingham: Venice of the North

A passel of towns are dubbed the 'Venice of the North,' but one town that supposedly has more miles of canals than Venice does not - Birmingham, England. but according to a NYTiumes article it's true - but the article quotes locals who lament the canal conditions, often unpassable due to tons of detritus dumped into them, from shopping carts to old bikes to usual rubbish. A glimmer of hope is held that some day the city will reclaim its former industrial canals and be entitled to call itself the Venice of the North. Amsterdam, Brugge and Hamburg, which claims more bridges than Venice, legitimately apply the monniker to themselves.
