Biking the Dingle Peninsula in a day?

My husband and I (30) are going to be in Dingle, Ireland in late May. I wanted to do the Slea Head drive, but have read a few reports from people who have biked it. I think this sounds like fun. I have a couple questions though.

How long does this take?

How hard of a ride is it?

We are in fairly good shape, but don't bike more than a couple times a year. I would appreciate any advice on this. Thanks!

I did it on my 50th birthday, a lovely sunny day also i My. We rented bikes from Foxy Mike Moriarty (I don't know if his shop is still there, but I'm sure there are others.) The bikes were "cross" bikes, configured like a mountain bike with lots of gears but no suspension. They were fine for the ride and I really enjoyed it. Lots of stops and things to see along the way, so we spent all day.

I'd have to find a map to see the route we took---I seem to recall some climbing oer a hill on the return, but it wasn't bad.

I highly recommend this as a great way to see the perimeter of the peninsula.

Thanks enzian! So, by all day....do you mean morning till dark? Or would we be back in towm at a reasonable time for dinner?

We were back just before 5 pm, and I don't think we got a particularly early start---probably 10:30 or so. and we made lots of stops to explore. plus a lunch break. I'm trying to remember the distance---20 plus, but I can't remember if those were miles or kilometers!

We returned the bikes, stopped in a pub for a "wee glass" of something, then went back and showered and dressed for dinner at 7:30.

Has anyone else done this? Does the bicycle rental shop prepare you with a map of a suggested route? Thanks!

There is a good, simple Slea Head Loop tourist map that is given out everywhere, and certainly at Foxy John's.

The wind can be a problem but the views are breathtaking. You'll see the Blasket Islands - which were inhabited up until 1955.
