Biking on the Rhine

Has anyone done this? We are staying in St. Goar and it sounds like we can take bikes on the boat with us, cruise to Bacharach and ride back? Can you leave the bikes and explore? I don't travel light, so I'm happy to take a bike lock with me if necessary! I cannot figure out that k-d schedule at all, but I guess we'll figure that out when we get there.

I hope we're staying in St. Goar - I'm waiting to hear back from Hotel Am Markt. Thanks for any other tips!

The Hotel am Markt at 59E a night seems to be the popular choice amongst Fodor members.

I guess you have their email address.

You can bike on bike paths from Koeln to Mainz, stop where you desire, lock your bike up and wander around the towns or visit a WWII museum, such as in Remagen. I have biked some stretches of it and I actually think it's more convenient than having to park a car some distance away and walk. I believe you can take a bike on the K-D boats. Send them an e-mail and ask.

We've done some light biking from St. Goar north along the river. You'll run out of path in some spots, but it's very pleasant mostly.

If you ferry across to St. Goarshausen, you can bike north to Burg Maus (castle) north of town and see the falconry show there.

The Am Markt may have bikes for rent - many places have a few for a small fee or nothing.

I couldn't figure out the KD schedule online either, but it all worked out ok. I believe the boat stops fairly frequently in both St. Goar and Bacharach. It was less frequent north of St. Goar.
