Bike tour in Dordogne

Has anyone used Deluxe Cycle Tours for bike trips in Dordogne? Planning July trip with family of 4 including 10 year old son and 14 year old daughter---any words of wisdom appreciated.

My words of wisdom on biking in the Dordogne, especially with kids? One word: roadkill.

My kids grew up spending summers at our house in the Dordogne in summer and we tried biking....ONCE. Would never do it again. Small, tortuous roads with fast drivers whipping around curves. Just plain scary and dangerous.

If you must bike, just do day rentals from one of the campgrounds that's on a bike path, like the one that begins in Groléjac.

Really, this will NOT be fun.

Especially not in July. It looks like a lovely leisurely tour on back roads, but July is not the time to do it.

Although the perception of many people is that the Dordogne is 'undiscovered' you will find the roads teaming at that time of the year, even the smaller ones. It's a major holiday destination for the French, as well as other Europeans and North Americans. I can't believe it would be enjoyable.

You should heed the advice of St. Cirq and Carlux who both know the area well indeed.

However, for a lighter look at a family cycling trip in the Dordogne, you might want to read Christopher Buckley's account

I would assume that the routes taken are safe, even with July traffic. Often a non-cyclist's perception of the danger is exaggerated.

I would be more concerned about the ability of the children to ride the distances for the week. Only you know their ability. Most children of that age would tire of all the cycling. That said, I do remember being concerned when one parent brought his 8 year old to our Saturday 50 mile ride. He easily kept up with all the adults.

1600 GBP pp for a six night tour seems to be more than 'deluxe'

I cycled down the West Coast of France and spent 90% of the time on superb cycle tracks. With the amazing coast and great campsites, I can highly recommend it to anyone, including families. Have a look at:

Problem is, there aren't any "superb cycle tracks" in the Dordogne. There's one true bike path that I know of that begins/ends in Groléjac, which isn't even near the main sites.

When we rented a house in Domme, one of our house-mates, a fairly experienced cyclist, was keen on renting a bike for a day. Well, he rented for a day but returned after a few hours, saying that he did not feel comfortable on the roads..
