Bicycling in Scotland

My son and I are taking a trip to Scotland in August. We are planning on bicyling around Stirling an then heading toward St. Andrews. Has anyone done this and if so can you suggest routes to take and places to stay? I was planning on doing a max. of 20 miles per day with lots of stops for sightseeing along the way. (we want to se castles)
After that we're renting a car and driving to the west coast. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Carolyn
Contact the Cyclist TOuring Club - I think their site is www.ctc.org.

Are you doing road bikes or Mountain Bikes. I know there is a mountain bike trail that goes thru Callendar (near Stirling)

Tip uy Ordnance Survey maps of the areas you will be going through, that way you can see all the gradients, contours, road heights, road sizes, pubs, hotels, post offices, ancient monuments, standing stones, castles, ruins, churches etc.
(I take it you want to plan routes along the quiet roads & divert off for interesting spots.)
You can get them in local shops in whatever area you are in - 1.25 in to a mile is fine.
SCOTTISH CASTLES:
http://www.castles.org/Chatelaine/INDEX.HTM
Everything else:
http://www.scotland-inverness.co.uk/places.htm

I have pals who do this sort of thing. I will raid their library in a couple of days and send details.

Sorry to take so long to do this, Carolyn.

I've trawled my friends' bookcase and can find only one route in Fife recommended. I do know Fife has a network of cyclepaths

Nothing round Stirling at all. There will be stuff, but it's a fairly built up sort of area, and you'll posible have to check out local details when you get there.

Sheila, I'm very happy to report that Falkirk/Stirling has a considerable amount of the National Cycle Network within its area, as do many local authorities on the Eastern side of Scotland. Fife's is particularly well known as you are aware and well it should be.

Your trip sounds like fun, Carol
