Bewitched, Bothered and Bewidered-Como or Corne?
 

I'm confused about which would be a better choice in late June -- the Lake Como area or the Italian Alps (Breuil-Cervinia, Corne, Aosta). I've heard a lot about the lakes region, but not much about the western Italian alps area in the Valle d'Aosta). I'm travelling with my wife and teenage son. We'll be coming from Florence and Venice, and I guess a less-touristy, calmer, naturally beautiful environment would be better. Is the lake region very crowed by late June (which is when we'll be travelling)? Has anyone stayed and/or hiked around Corne (Gran Paradiso state park), or Breuil-Cervinia? I assume a car would be necessary, so should I rent in Florence and drive? How is the driving in Italy? How long a drive would it be? Conversely, I assume we could take a train to Como or Varenna from Florence. We've got 4-5 days in either of these areas. Any input would be greatly appreciated because I'm stymied.

After 22 trips to Europe and 12 to Italy "the Lakes" are still my favorite destination. But, it is really 3 destinations--not one. Consider Lago Orta/Maggiore as well as Como--especially with a car. More potential day trips to scenic areas.

We drove through Italy and stayed 5 days in Como. While in Como we really didn't use our car at all. We took a bus up to Lake Lugano and boats to other locations. I was NOT impressed with the city of Como and would not stay there again. I did like some of the smaller villages along the lake though. The only place that was difficult to drive was Florence. OK getting in but you would want to park your car until ready to leave...

We spent a week in Cervinia last June. Whilst the setting at the foot of the Matterhorn is lovely and Val Tournenche is very attractive, Cervinia is not an ideal base IMO.

The village itself is overdeveloped with an ugly periphery of high-rise hotels. June is still relatively low season and most of the lifts are still closed, so your hiking options are also limited.

The Valle d'Aosta area is very attractive and has plenty to offer for 5 days, but I would choose another base.

You mention Corne but I can't find it on the map. Do you mean Cogne?

We loved Lake Como. I'd do a few nights there and a few at another lake. We were there in late June and it wasn't too crowded. Enjoy!

A belated thanks to you all for responding. I have been out of town, and just returned. Yes, I meant Cogne, not Corne.

Cogne is very beautiful, but much more limiting than the Lakes. If you want mountains, I would probably choose Castelrotto in the Dolomites over Cogne. It is much easier to get to, and more options once you get there. Hiking around Cogne is beautiful, but very quiet. You can also find peace and quiet in the Dolomites, but with other alternatives in addition.

It is very difficult to compare the alps with the lakes. It is really personal preference as to what you are looking for.
