beware furture travelers
For any furture travelers using a tour company, please beware of "Tour Crafters" from libertyville Ill.
My family and I were to use them for a trip to Italy, and because of their lack of attention to detail forgot to issue 2 round trip tickets to Rome. We only found this out 2 weeks before we were to leave. We ended up not going and they ended up keeping 30% of our money for the mistake they made.
Please beware of this company

daph,
IMHO, since ‘notrip’ hasn't registered here before, this is his/her first post - I can only assume that this is a post designed to criticize a single company.
Notrip - How about a review of your trip to show that this was the only hiccup that you had? Then we might be able to take your complaint seriously, thanks in advance

Notrip,
What a truly horrible experience! Have you tried contacting the Attorney General's office in Illinois? I would definitely file a claim against them.
Did they give you any options at all, other than to lose the 30%?
We had a bad experience, more like a "bait and switch", with Grand Circle Travel earlier this year, and I contacted the ombudsman at National Geographic Traveler Magazine. He got involved right away, and while he was unable to do anything for us, he WAS able to write a column that ran in newspapers across the country, blasting Grand Circle for their dubious business practices. That actually made us feel a lot better, anyway!
As for us, we're sticking to independent travel, no tour companies in our future.
Please keep us updated, and ignore the ignorant posters who would trivialize your problem. Good Luck!

I'd sue them for nonfeasance. Your deposit represents an implicit contract on their part to deliver specified goods and services.
Your payment to them can only be forfeit due to action or inaction on your part, not on theirs. If the law allowed the sort of thing you describe, unscrupulous operators could make a good living by intentionally failing to order tickets.
Spend a few bucks to get a demand letter sent.

OK, I'm the first to admit I missed that part of the posting!
However I'm not the only person who get annoyed by posters who register only to use these forums to 'blast' companies.
Do they have recommendations of companies to use?
Has anyone else on this Forum found 'Tour Crafters' useless?

Gee, Alya, and I thought the purpose of this forum was for travelers to share information, good AND bad. I,for one, thank the OP for taking the time to post in an effort to prevent others from possibly having the same misfortune.

Notrip,
I am so sorry to hear about the trouble you had. I hope you take Hagan's advice and do something to get your money back.
I will apologize for the other rude replys you got. I can't imagine why some one would like to be cruel to you after you've just had a terrible experince.
Alya, who cares how many times someone has posted to this site. I'm guessing you must have just had a bad day, that's why I've decided to erase what else I was going to say to you.

Hagan - actually I do agree with you.
Does Notrip have any recommendations for us?
He/she must have restaurants or hotels that he/she has frequented and enjoyed.
Do you think we will hear from him/her again? Only time will tell

OK - think about it folks. If you had a company cheat you like supposedly happened here -- would you look for a website you had NEVER before even once visited and post something like this?
Probably not. Of course, this could be a real situation - but it really sounds more to me like a jilted lover, angry relative, feuding neighbor or competitor trying to get back at someone at Tour Crafters.

I agree. Something about the OP just doesn't ring true. If they made a mistake they still had a chance to make things right two weeks out. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT REALLY HAPPENED (nor do any of us) but I suspect there is more to this story. I checked out the website and was impressed. They are well represented with agents across the country. Humans make mistakes but there are ways to rectify them. "We ended up not going" makes me wonder if they pulled out for their own reasons, thereby losing the 30%. I can't imagine a reputable agent not trying to make things right - if only to get the remaining 70% of the tour!

How could they take a trip with no tickets?
Why did they end up not going?

I don't think it's so unbelievable that if something like that happened, you'd look for some travel internet place to post a complaint, even if you didn't regularly. I've heard some complaints about that company before, I think (not sure, but I think on Frommers).
However, it would not be legal to take money and not give you tickets, so it does sound like the poster backed out of the trip for some reason, which would be how they could keep some money. Otherwise, it would obviously be illegal.
I don't have any problems with people posting complaints about companies, but I wish they would be honest and clear with the details as to what really happened, as it makes a big difference. Sometimes the details show that the company wasn't quite as terrible as it originally sounds and that the traveler had a lot to do with some of the problems or results.

as you say
"I wish they would be honest and clear with the details as to what really happened"
It does seem as though the OP might not be being totally honest about their dealings with this company.
Which is why these types of posts don't work on Fodors - too vague!

Hmmm...it sounds to me as if some of the tickets were booked, but 2 were not, and notrip canceled because the whole family couldn't go together. The tour company must have stuck to the letter of the contract on the tickets that were booked, and kept the deposits.
If that is what happened, I would think one might threaten some legal action on behalf of the two tickets that were screwed up by the tour company. The tour company might then refund the money they kept as a sort of quid pro quo for not suing. Worth a try anyway.

Good thinking Marilyn, bet you are right. And if that is the case a Small Claims Court (which can be up to $5,000.00) would be in order. And if a represenative from this firm did not appear at the court hearing notrip would win by default. Are you listening notrip? At least this is true in California.
