Between Rome and Naples
 

I have a wedding the first week of August 2017 in the Naples area. I plan on flying into Rome and am traveling with my husband and 7 year old daughter. I'm looking for somewhere to stay/visit between Rome and Naples for 2-3 days.I'm open to any ideas and would love to do something off the beaten path! Beach resorts are low on my list as I plan on visiting the Amalfi coast which is close to family I'll be visiting.

Why don't you stay in Naples? There's a great archeological museum in Naples (with a lot of the artifacts excavated from Pompeii), and Naples is also a good base for a day trip to Pompeii and Herculaneum.

Don't stay downtown... there are some nice hotels by the port.

"off the beaten path":
catamaran from Naples to Ventotene Island, then boat or catamaran to Ponza Island - Anzio (beach town very close to Rome) and commuter train to Rome.

August is hight season. Accomodation on the small Islands of Ventotene and Ponza may be fully booked if you come too late.

Caserta is also a town where the palace is.

You going by car or train?

Sorry I should have mentioned that I do plan on spending a week in the Naples area. My parents are from Avellino and we plan on taking my daughter to Amalfi, Naples, Vesuvius, Pompeii. The wedding is in Benevento and we're spending a night there as well.

Looking for something different that I haven't been yet. We did Puglia the last time we went to visit relatives and loved it. Wondering now if there is something between Rome and Naples that I've never been OR even South of Naples? Haven't really been south of Amalfi...

I'll look into Caserta! I've heard of it but don't know much.

For south of Naples, how about that village which made so much news this past year? Acciaroli. It's 2 1/2 hours south of Amalfi. They have about 2k residents and 300 of them are over 100 years old! There are a team of researchers who are descending on the town in order to find out what they are doing right. One thing mentioned is that they put rosemary in everything. The town looks very charming. Have fun, lucky you!

May be you tell us where between Rome and Naples you have already been.
I couldn't know that you already know Ponza and Ventotene (and probably Gaeta and the Minturno Festival too).
