Between Cortina and Venice

I almost have my trip planned for summer thanks to the good suggestions on this site.

One more request- I am traveling from Ortisei to Venice through Cortina (by car). I would like to stay somewhere along the way that is close to Venice.

I have read many posts and looking for cute city with reasonable hotel. Some cities I have read about include Belluno, Bessano del Grappa, and Asolo. Any suggestions on quick overnight as I head to Venice?

Vittorio Veneto, I have friends with a cute B&B there. They are a hoot(as the Brits say) Inexpensive lodgings and restaurants are impt after the prices of Venice.

Hi, I do not have a map of Italy in front of me but we
stayed in Urbino going to Venice driving from Toscana. It was a great choice.

We drove from Venice to Cortina, and it took much less time than I had planned. As I recall, there was not many interesting things to see along the way. I would stay overnight in Cortina.

Vetralla's link appears to lead to a place north of Rome, not close to Venice. Did you mean something else?

We stayed in Bassano del Grappa for this purpose, and liked it very much. The Hotel Victoria was very kind, even though I had mistakenly reserved for the wrong date. They sent us to an incredible place for dinner.

The town of Asolo also looked very tempting as we drove by. I think it's a bit more expensive than Bassano.

Thanks for the response, I will check out the suggestions. I plan to spend the day driving and stopping/hiking through the Dolomites as I make my way from Ortisei to around Venice. The next morning we are traveling to Venice for two nights. Therefore, just looking for a great place to stay within about an hour drive of Venice.

I cannot find the B&B in Vittorio Veneto from the website you provided. Any help?

Vittorio Veneto is an interesting small city. If you rent the DVD "In Love and War" with Sandra Bullock and Chris O'Donnell you might enjoy it as it was filmed in and around Vittorio Veneto. It is about the last or one of the last battles in Italy during WWI. Story about Ernest Hemingway as a young man and his romance with a RedCross nurse. Vittorio Veneto would be an interesting place to stay for one night and it is just a bit more than an hour from Venice. The next small city south of Vittorio Veneto is Congeliano, another lovely city. The Hotel Canon d' Oro is on XX Via Settembre 129. Their tel.# is 0438-34246. Via Settembre is the oldest street in Congeliano. Behind Via Settembre is the curvy, but quick road up to the Castle of Congliano which provides a beautiful view of the landscape and the Dolomites Mts. About one hour drive to Venice. Hotels are not expensive (especially compared to Venice) and the food is wonderful. Note: Friday morning's is the Market on Via Settembre in Colegiano, not a good day to try to get quickly out of town. The Market is closed down by 1:30pm.

Thank you for the information. I thought the best places to stay might be the ones you mentioned or Belluno.

Wasn't that "A Farewell to Arms", with Gary Cooper and Helen Hayes?

Ira, The newer film proposes to tell the true story that was fictionalized by Hemingway in Farewell to Arms.
