better weather in spring or fall??
I am planning my first trip to Italy and I am not sure if I should go with my original plan for Oct, or if the weather would be better in April/May. I am planning on Venice, Lake Como, and Umbria. Any suggestions?

Days are longest in late May, but even April are longer than October 1. October might be just as warm as April, perhaps not as warm as after May 15.
October is starting to be "end of the season" in Bellagio and the middle of Lake Como - - based on what I have heard from the seasonal wmployees like wait staff, hotel staff, etc. Got the impression that October is a transition month, and a certain numbner to Switzerland, especially St. Moritz for their winter jobs. Likewise April. Best wishes, Rex |

If you want the best combination of good weather and long days, try to travel in May, September or very early October.

I've been in spring and fall and while the weather can be similar, I think to see the most beautiful side of the Italian landscape you should go in the spring. The green hillsides of the springtime will be brown in fall after the harvest.

The thing no one has mentioned is that by October the locals are really sick of tourists. If you go in May its the beginning of the season and locals are happier to see us - they're still thinking about profits and haven't yet been aggravated to death by difficult guests and stupid requests.(I picked this POV up from a hotelier we discussed this with in Sorrento - said by the end of the season he's ready to shoot himself - or the next impossible guest.)
