What to buy and what not too buy? Fear of being ripped off... Tell me your stories :-)

Don't buy any food products. They don't know how to cook and you'll feel completely ripped off.

buy everything, fear nothing.

Buy tickets for the Underground. Awfully useful if you want to get through the turnstile.

Because you've experienced that in other places, or because you've heard that about London?<BR><BR>In any case, London is a very expensive city to live in or to visit, but I have never been ripped off (except when I paid an admission fee to visit the London Dungeon.)<BR><BR>Good buys for the buck or pound:<BR>name-brand preserves or teas or cookies<BR>(such as at Harrods or Fortnum and Mason's). It's not that they're cheap, it's just that you're getting a nice little gift or souvenir that isn't too dear.<BR><BR>If you want to buy something for a lady, look for the shops called<BR>Accessorize--there are several. They have a variety of relatively inexpensive scarves, sandals, hair dodads, and handbags.<BR><BR>Items in some of the museum shops can be<BR>good buys, depending: tea towels, stationery, refrigerator magnets, books, puzzles.<BR><BR>Clothing is relatively expensive at the name-brand stores. There is a Burberry's outlet store in Hackney which I have not visited. There are also several well-known flea markets on various days of the week, starting quite early in the a.m.<BR><BR>If you go elsewhere on this Fodor's website and look for the London section, you will find shopping suggestions. Also look at timeout.com which has good shopping suggestions.<BR><BR><BR><BR>

Everything is soo expensive! However, I had fun in the Portobello market. I'm not a shopper but my treasure from a recent trip was a great whistle...it is dated 1940 amd when you blow it ....it is instantly recognizable as not a U.S. whistle. Anyway, I am a teacher and will use it daily! It will remind me of my wonderful trip. I think it was $10.
