Best Wishes for a super trip for my sister Amy
We are taking my sister Amy, to England in 20 days on March 6th. She has only flown once before and has never been out of the country. We are going to be spending 3 days in London, and then 4 days traveling around the small towns in Dorset.

I thought it would be nice to give her a print out of some suggestions from you all at Fodor's about what to expect, must sees, and some best wishes for a wonderful trip. I am meeting her on Presiden't Day for lunch and I thought it would be fun to give this thread to her.

If anyone has a couple of minutes I would really appreciate your time.

Thanks so much,
Robbyn
From one Amy to another--have a wonderful trip!
The parks are some of my favorite bits of London; Speakers' Corner in Hyde Park can be fascinating.
Sherlock Holmes is at home still on Baker Street, if you're a fan.
Do take one or two of the London Walks!
Be sure to ride the Tube to some of the spots you're going.
I second the Tower tour--it's terrific!
Westminster Abbey is lovely; check out Poet's Corner.
Covent Garden has some nice shops. Try Salieri for dinner (Londoners--is it still there?)
And if, like me, you were named for the Amy
in Little Women, take it along to re-read about her trip abroad whilst you're in London!

Hi, Amy!
Have the most wonderful time. If you like to shop, you really MUST go to the flea market on Portobello Road. It is held on weekends! Get there early, as 100,000 people visit it each weekend! You can return with lovely silver, linens, jewelry and just about anything your heart desires. I think your family would love some gifts from here, no?
Go to Harrods for a formal afternoon tea. (They also serve coffee and cold drinks.) The little sandwiches are exquisite as are the yummy desserts. It may be a good idea to make reservations.
Of course, the theatre in London is wonderful!!!!
How old are you Amy? And, do you like ballet or music?
Cheers!
Gigi
Hi, Amy,
My first trip to Europe was to England and it was wonderful, from the minute I got off of the plane. Try to go by Buckingham Palace and see the Queens Guards, ride on the top of a double decker bus, feed the pigeons at Trafalgar Square, go to Covent Garden and if you remember in Mary Poppins the lady that fed the birds by the church-you should go to that church,it is St Pauls.
You must write to your friends at Fodors and tell us all how much fun you had when you return home.
Have fun~
Candice in New York City

Hope you enjoy Dorset, together with East Devon they are my favourite areas of England. You will love Lyme Regis, if you get a chance walk some of the coastal path .Oh yes and you can get wonderful fish 'n chips at the Lyme fish bar!Just over the border in Devon the town of Beer is worth a visit and the village of Branscombe. It is reputed to be the longest village in England and has lots of lovely thatched cottages and a couple of pubs. Have a wonderful holiday

Jan Gray, Romsey, Hampshire.

Robbyn, you're a great sister. Tell Amy to try a shandy - it's like a lemonade beer, although it's made differently depending on where you are. Not as filling or burpy as beer, very refreshing. For atmosphere, the pub where Samuel Johnson used to reign - I think it's called the Cheshire Cheese? It's close to his old house, which I also found interesting if you're into literary types. And in that case, yes Poets Corner in Westminster Abbey - I burst into tears myself. Clotted cream - yummy! There are so many great ideas here. Outside of London, be sure to take a walk on a public footpath; it's the English thing to do. And the English are just too, too delightful. Have a great time!

Shanna - Gainesville, FL

and how about that little museum near 10 Downing St where churchill and his people lived/worked during the war -- can't recall its name -- was it the war museum? -- in any event, you walk from room to room where they show you in minute detail how they managed the war -- electronics, living quarters, planning rooms, etc. I thought it was fascinating.

from washington dc

Robbyn, while it is all well and good that you want a long list of names of people you never met to give to your sister why don't you look at the older postings in order to give her some useful information? That would be a real courtesy---instead of asking people to just write again what they have already written
