Best way to travel from Rome to Siena

My husband and I (and three pieces of luggage) will be traveling from Rome to Siena. Should we take the train to Siena (with a transfer), take the bus directly to Siena, or take the train to Florence and rent a car for the drive to Siena. We do plan to use a rental car during our 4 nights in Tuscany, but I assumed we would rent one in Siena. Any thoughts?

Are you spending time in Rome first or just arriving in Rome and embarking to Siena immediately?

If you are spending some time in Rome and then going on to Siena, my suggestion would be to take the train to Florence. Pick up a car near the train station and drive to Siena. I have done this a couple of times, it is easy.

If you intend to arrive at the airport in Rome and leave immediately for Siena, I would rent a car at the airport and drive to Siena. I have done this too, medium easy.

This is my humble opinion.

Have a wonderful time.

We have a similar scenario in April. Flying into Rome late at night, we have decided to spend the night in Rome and leave for Siena in the morning. Since we will not really need a car until we leave Siena for other parts of Tuscany, and since we would prefer to not drive in Rome, we have decided to take the train to Siena and rent the car there. At the end of the trip we will return the car to the Rome airport. Hope this helps.

Don't rent a car in Siena. Save yourself a change of train and rent in Chiusi.

We thought about that, thanks, but realized that we didn't need the car until we were leaving Siena a few days later, that plus we had a larger choice in Siena than Chiusi.

We took the bus....so we wouldn't have to bother changing trains and also because we were told that the bus stop in Siena was closer to our hotel than was the train station.

It was a 3 hour bus ride...but we brought along a bag of delicious Italian pastries and cookies which really helped make the ride more pleasant.

socaltraveler. I know you will get a larger choice of cars in Siena.
Also, driving from other parts of Tuscany to the Rome airport is really easy.

Hi J,

I would take the bus from rome Tiburtina to Siena.

Easier baggage handling.
