I've always tipped on a gondola ride, although I'm not certain if it's the norm.
You can easily roll your luggage onto the vaporetto and off again at any stop. Just as long as you can handle it on your own.

Vaporetto as many times as you possibly can and especially at night! Great photo opportunities especially if you can get a seat at the front. Gondola ride is a must - whatever the cost...my gosh...visit Venice and not ride in a gondola...can't imagine!
Definitely negotiate your length of time and cost before agreeing. No matter what anyone tells you, not every gondolier sticks to his original quote. Both times I've been, we didn't like the first quote, started to walk away and he bargained with us. Not a lot but enough. I was there 2 years ago and a 45 min. ride cost us US $100 and that was for 4 people.
