Best way to get to the Sognefjord?
My parents and I will be in Oslo next July and would like to spend a day seeing the Sognefjord. Would it be best to fly to Bergen then train to the fjord then back to Bergen, or train from Oslo to fjord then to Bergen? We will then be flying from Bergen to Stockholm, Thanks!

The Sognefjord stretches about 200 Kms inland and about an hour or two north of Bergen. I would actually recommend your parents plan it so that they have more than a day. There are incredible sights along the Sognefjord stretch and the OPTIMAL way to explore it would be by car. That said, if they are not as adventurous then the train (i.e. Norway in a Nutshell) might be the next best way to explore combination with ferry. My favorite stops were Vik, Balestrand, and Sogndal. The advantage of a car is that you stop at leisure and offers ths choice to see the stave churches, which is one of the most unique things you can see in Norway. We took a couple of ferries with the car, so don't feel we missed on that. We rented a hybrid which worked out fantastic as far as mileage.

Or take a bus.
Bergen as a base isn't bad. Nicer than Oslo imo http://www.ruteinfo.net/ There is a bus to Lom through Sogndal over Sognfjell. Spectacular! here's the Sognbussen timetable http://ruteinfo.net/RuteinfoIISStati...r/t/22-450.htm |
and here is the Otta - Lom - Sogndal timetable
