best way to get to MUC from Oberammergau?

Right now my itinerary has me in Oberammergau for my last 3 nights.
I need to drop off rental car and go to Munich airport from Oberammergau for a late afternoon flight.
What is best route?
Thanks in advance.

Hi TAW,

Go to www.viamichelin.com, www.mappy.com, www.maps.google.com

The route is direct via A-95 and viamichelin says it takes 1:25 but I would allow 2 hours plus drop time for the car. It is an easy drive. Have fun !

Hi,

While I agree with the previous post although I'd allow a little more than 2 hours. Another half hour gives you a little more "room". Better to be safe.

Dropping the car at Munich airport is easy. We've done it 5 times the last 7 years, most recently last October. One central location to drop cars for all major car rentals. The signs leading towards the drop off are very well posted. They are very quick. I think we've spent, at the most, 15 minutes here.

Thanks everyone. I didn't think it was going to be that difficult. Besides, we'll have a GPS. I'm hoping for a 4pm flight out of MUC so that will give us plenty of time to get there.

Most transatlantic flights leave in the AM---a PM flight would be unusual.

We had a 3:15pm flight (non stop) on Lufthansa from Munich to Newark, NJ last year. We planned our trip so this would be our flight home. It was on a Friday, if that matters. Not sure how flights are scheduled, but we checked again for this Oct. (we didn't get to go though) and the 3:15pm flight was still scheduled.

right now Lufthansa has one that leaves MUC around 4 or 4:30pm nonstop to SFO. That's what I want...

Because it is a central return facility at MUC airport, be sure - when you first pick up your car - that any dings etc. are recorded on your rental contract. If they are very noticeable, take a picture. I had a very unpleasant surprise when, weeks after my last trip, I suddenly got a charge for a damage on the car which I did not incur. Fortunately, AMEXCO CDW insrnace pair for it, but it still was a nuisance. They are much more picky about these things in Europe than in the US.

Also, if you return you car at a time when there are lots of new pickups, the wait at the counter where you pick up your final papers can be long. Give yourself some extra time.

Finally, you most likely will be going from A-96 to the A-99 (Munich by-pass) to the A-9. At rush hour the first (city) part of the A-99 and again the part from where the Salzburg Autobahn (A-8) joins the A-99 to the A-9 are notorious for "Staus", the German word for traffic jams.

There is a service station at the entrance to the airport where you can gas up your car, if you have to return it with a full tank.
