Best way to get to Appian Way
 

Will be staying in Rome next year and have never seen the Appian Way. A recent travel show whetted my appetite to see it. We will be staying near the Pantheon. What is the best way to get to the Appian Way from there? Bus, taxi? And what are the major highlights to be seen?

If you decide to walk it from the beginning (Porta San Sebastiano) *only* do this on a Sunday when the Via Appia Antica is closed to traffic.
It's a bit of a scary stretch to walk otherwise.
Also look into renting bicycles in that area.

Another option is the Archeobus which now leaves from Termini, do a search for info.

The area of the Catacombs and past them is fine for walking and biking anytime. It's just that stretch from the Porta S. Sebastiano to before the Catacombs that gets alittle hairy. Regards, Walter

ParadiseLost issues a good warning - i walked that few mile or so stretch he/she's talking about and it's more than scary! narrow road with walls each side and speeding cars coming around curves - take the bus for sure to the catacombs area.

This is great infor you can get on off this bus. We walked almost the whole thing which is 11 miles....way to much some things are in reality drive by items others you want to get off and really explore the bus gives you that option.

Where do you see the old old Appian Way of the pictures - just old stones - the only Appian Way i saw out there was a regular highway, though made of cobblestones but not the Appian Way picture sketched in my mind. Thanks.

You want the Via Appia Antica.

PalQ: I've only visited an original section by Archeobus, so I'm using my map.

If you follow my directions I posted and instead of getting off the bus and turning right heading to the Catacombs.
Turn left on the Via Appia Antica and walk ~1.4m/2.2km and you will come to a nice section of original road with tomb remains on both sides (rural, treelined, nice photo op).

Also in ancient times prostitutes used to ply their trade alongside this road among these tombs.
And they still do, even in the daytime. Regards, Walter

I had already noted the Archeobus, but not read anything further.

Now I just wish I was going to be in Rome on a Sunday morning so I could take that bicycle tour! I think I'd feel so much more involved than seeing it all from a bus...
