oooooooooh, pretty far unless you have a lot of time. figure at least 7-8 hours on expressways. although depending on time of year and all could be very pretty (pretty would take longer though).

Dear Mr King

The reference library of the City of Cincinnati may have the Thomas Cook European Timetable.

Table 90 shows that you can board a sleeper at Venice Santa Lucia about 2215, leave at 2243, reach Nice at 0905 or 0942, change trains, leave at 1010 on the Grand Sud buffet car train, and reach Montpellier at 1419 or Toulouse at 1617.

Welcome to Europe.

Ben Haines, London

I agree, pretty far. Do you need to go straight to Avignon? My brother & I caught the train from Venice to Nice, and stayed there for a day and a half before training it to Avignon. It was a nice way to break up the trip, and we got to check out the open markets in Nice.

Venice-Avignon: 850 km (530 mi)
Count abt 10 hours by car.
Train: as Ben suggested; from Nice to Avignon by TGV takes between 3 and 4 hours. There is fast one leaving Nice at 15:56 PM to reach Avignon at 18:58. That would then give you 7 hours in Nice to have lunch and sightsee and still reach Avignon at a decent hour.

850km - at 120, you could do it in 7 hours no sweat (but as an average that may be flying. ;-)
