Best way to get from Sorrento to Capri? And Sorrento to Pompeii?

Hello...we will be in Sorrento in June. We are traveling through Italy by car (between cities...then local transportations within cities). The day we plan to visit Capri we will be leaving Sorrento for Amalfi. What is the best way to visit Capri for this route? Is there a place we can park the car on the way down the coast and then ferry over to Capri? Or, is it best to leave our car at the hotel in Sorrento and Ferry from Sorrento, come back to Sorrento and then drive to Amalfi? ANY help would be appreciated.

Also, what is the best way to see Pompeii. We will be driving from Florence to Sorrento. Thought we would drive to Sorrento and check-in hotel. Then, take another means to Pompeii (bus or train)? What do you recommend? Stopping in Pompeii on the way by car, checking into hotel in Sorrento then go back by car, bus, or train? THANKS SO MUCH.

Other can tell you more, but we took the local train from Sorrento to Pompeii. It stops right at the scavi. Personally, wouldn't dream of driving the Amalfi road! The driver will miss the scenery and will be lucky to miss everything else! Take the local bus and let the local pros do it. They are as amazing as the road itself. PS: You will notice many of the buildings and cars you pass will have large scrape marks. Some of the buidings even have chunks out of them..there is a reason for this.

The parking area at the Sorrento ferry harbour is a paying one and is rather small. Should you intend to leave your car there, do it early in the morning (it tends to be full up around 8 AM). The best solution would be to leave your car at the hotel in Sorrento. This is a little town and you should not have to walk too much to get to the ferry. To go to Pompei, you have to use the coastal road (still ok after the heavy rains and mud damage). It will take you 45 minutes to get to Pompei and the ruins are located next to the mortorway exit (Pompei Scavi). There are plenty of (paying) private parkings available where you'll be able to park you car in the shades. As I mentioned on another posting, be careful as South Italian drivers tend to be unpredictable. Or should I say they are predictable in the sense they won't respect stop lines and traffic lights. They also don't indicate when they turn left or right...

I would recommend that you leave your car at your hotel in Sorrento when going to Capri and Pompeii. You will surely save yourself a lot of hassle. The local train which takes you from Sorrento to Pompeii is called the Circumvesuviana and will take you approx. 45 min and drops you off right at the entrance.

To me driving at all in Italy would be a major headache. The Italian drivers are unpredictable and parking is scarce. The trains are convient, comfortable and very inexpensive. However if you must rent a car, leave it in Sorrento for your excursions to Amalfi and Pompeii. You can easily reach Pompeii on the local commuter train. It saves alot of hassles and drops you right at the ruins. I would NEVER drive to Amalfi. The road is very narrow and winding. Once you get there parking is limited. Ride the bus..relax..and enjoy the view!!
