Best way to get from Rome to Santorini
 

Hi everyone!
I'm wondering if I could get some suggestions on how to get from Rome to Santorini. Originally we were thinking of taking the ferry from brindisi but now I think we may fly. However I've been looking at flights and they are a bit pricey. Any suggestions on the best places to look? I've looked at aegian airlines, which seems to be the best one so far, but the cheaper flights are terrible times.

I doubt you'll find anything cheaper from Rome than Aegean's lowest fares. They compare to what the total cost of getting from Rome to Brindisi, then the ferry to Greece plus the bus to Athens and another ferry to Santorini would cost you. Not to mention all the time you'd waste in transit. Bite the bullet and deal with the terrible departure/arrival times, or spend more money on more convenient flights.

We're going the other way! Fly to Athens, ferry to Santorini and then try to go to Rome, then train to Nice & plane back home. Over the course of about 3 weeks.

Willing to take a few days out in transit if worth it.

So is ferry possible from Santorini to Italy mainland?

No, you will have to return to Athens for the bus or train to Patras or Igoumenitsa to catch a ferry to Italy. Some of the ferry companies offer a bus transer service from Athens and Piraeus to their ferries. In either direction, Italy>Santorini or Santorini>Italy, expect to spend at least 36 hours in transit. That's a minimum total of 3 days out of your holiday. Are you sure you don't want to fly?

I am planning the same trip for July! Ran across your post on here and wanted to touch base with you to see about your choices and get some feedback when you return if possible. how are you doing your flights? States to venice, rome to santorini, then return directly from santorini to the states?

There are no direct flights from Santorini to the States. All flights to the U.S. originate in Athens. If you're going to spend any time in Athens save it for the end of your trip so you have plenty of time to get back to the mainland for your flight home in case of last-minute cancellations due to high winds or mechanical breakdwons.

I'm trying to plan a trip in Italy/Greece for March (I know, it's a little early ;) The problem is, we only have the weekend to visit Greece, and would LOVE to go to Santorini. Is there a way to get there from anywhere in Italy without going through Athens and taking days??

It's not possible to fly directly but if you sign up for Aegean Airlines email newsletter they'll notify you when the saver fares for March are released so you can take advantage of them for a cheap flight from Rome, through Athens, to Santorini. Depending on the flight schedules you could be in Santorini in as little as 4 hours from Rome.
