Best way to get from Prague to Munich
I would like to travel from Prague to Munich on Wednesday May 15th.
How can I get a good train ticket or another type of transport (or mix)? I got a quote for 300 dollars for two train tickets (mine and my husband's), but I've been told in another thread that there are good deals if I buy the ticket in advance. Car rental is expensive because it includes a big drop-off charge from Czech Republic to Munich. It would otherwise be the best method in terms of time (4 hrs. 22 min according to Via Michelin) I'm open to your recommendations :-). Thanks, Barbara |
Who gave the quote of 300 dollars and what type of ticket is that fare? On the bahn.de website, I see nonrefundable fares that day as low as 29 euros plus seat reserversation, one-way, per person.

Jean, thanks for the info.
I saw the 151 dollars rate x2 in the www.gemut.raileurope.com web page, I thought the DB bahn web page was good only if your origin point was in Germany. I'm going to check it right now. Thanks again |
Having been in Prague in late September, and transferring to a cruise on the Danube, the rail system sucks.
There is an industry that has sprung up that has non-stop buses from Prague to Nuremberg, Regensburg and other towns on the Danube. From Regensberg it's about an hour to Munich or so by train. I think you'll find it a lot cheaper than entirely by train, and faster. |
Easy.
a) buy a Bayern ticket online at Bahn.de costs 26€ for 2 People b) buy at http://www.cd.cz/asistent/default.aspx 2 tickets Prague to Domažlice, the last stop in CZ. Cost 160 CZK per Person or 6.50€ per Person. Total costs are 39€ for 2 People or 19.50€ per person. |
The www.gemut link wouldn't open for me, but the raileurope.com part of the address would seem to indicate it's RailEurope Ltd. This is basically a travel agency that sells train tickets and other products... for a profit. They don't pass on discounts.

Hi Barbara-
It looks like the Bahn.de site has a bus that leaves Prague at 10:30 in the morning and arrive in Munich at 3 in the afternoon for 59E total for 2 adults. There are no changes. I believe I have seen bus fares on this route as low as 9 Euros per person. Google "Bus from Prague to Munich" to find other options. On this forum, other folks have described the bus as usually not full and plenty comfortable. Your luggage is placed in the bottom of the bus. |

Thank you for your replies! It is not expensive as I thought.
From your suggestions, I guess it would be better to take the morning train from Prague to Munich. It would take around 6 hours and cost 60 US$ aprox. Please, if there is any aspect I overlooked, help me notice it. Thanks again! Barbara |
Morning bus from Prague to Munich costs about 40US PP and takes five hours.

The direct bus is faster, and cheaper when you book in advance.
The bus line operated by German Rail can be booked via bahn.com, and you print your tickets at home. Go to bahn.com Make an inquiry for Prague-Munich on the day you wish to travel. Check the direct connections with zero transfers. You will see your morning train, leaving Prague at 9:15, arr Munich 15:03 And a bit below the bus, leaving Prague at 10:30, arr Munich 15:09 Same arrival time, but you can sleep in or have a long breakfast in Prague. And you pay only half what the train costs (when I did a search for May 15th) |
Once again: bus tickets as wewll as train tickets can be bought fro 29 EUR
|
Thank you so much!
I should take the bus then. The 60 dollars I wrote before, is actually not 60 dollars, but 58 euros for both tickets (29 euros each). Just one final question ... are the buses from Prague to Munich safe, clean and with comfortable seats? Or do you think I will have my husband complaining about? |
I believe they are open seating, but clean and comfortable.
If you consider the bus, make sure you arrange for the tickets 'on-line' or get your tickets the day before you leave Pragus. They [bus] can fill up if you wait until the morning of your transfer to Munich. |
