Best way to get from Nice to Avignon?

We are staying in Nice for a couple of nights and then traveling to the Avignon area (St. Remy actually) for three nights. Can this be done by car, or is train (or plane) a better option? What is the drive time, and what is the best route? Budget is very flexible and we are traveling with three kids ages 10, 8 and 6. Thanks in advance.

It's about maybe three hours but faster if you take the autoroute

I haven't gone between those two points but think driving is the best idea because St Remy is really a small town. It doesn't even have a train station, so I'm sure not an airport. That means you'd have to fly to Avignon (or take the train) and then what? I would usually recommend the train between two points in that area that had train stations.

We drove from Nice to Avignon in April,2004. Picked up rental car at Europe Car at the Nice train station. Got out of town and onto autoroute very easily. It was a pleasant, well marked drive to Avignon. Took about 3 hours. I strongly recommend renting a car and driving. St. Remy is easy to find enroute to Avignon.

A very easy drive on the autoroute. I drove from Villefranche-sur-Mer, which is east of Nice, to Les Baux in October. It took 2 1/2 hours.
