Best way to experience Croatia islands

We're not cruisers and even if we were we're not interested in 7 day cruises, which is the majority of cruises available. Looking for recommendations as to the best way to experience the Croatian islands, which needs to include Hvar. We will be staying the Split area and the Dubrovnik area for a few days each so we can travel from either location. Should we ferry from Split to Hvar and take short trips for a few days from there? Or similar option from Dubrovnik? Are some islands more "must experience" than others? Thanks for all suggestions.

Which islands to see really depends on your interests. I thought the descriptions in the Rough Guide particularly helpful. The Rough Guide also provides good information about how to travel between these places. A cruise is NOT necessary -- you have options for ferries and catamarans, and some of the ferries are car ferries or ferry busses....

For your transportation options, you might also consult rome2rio.com -- just be sure to click through to the links it provides, as the main site is not sensitive to seasonal variation.

Good luck!

Several of the Islands are easy to reach from Split Port...

Brac [Supetar] takes an hour, and Hvar [Stari Grad] takes 2 hours by ferry. I'd avoid the catamaran service if you really want to enjoy the scenery. There's a bus station two minutes walk from the Ferry Terminal at Supetar, and there'll be buses to meet the ferry at Stari Grad.

Both Islands are an easy day trip from Split Port. The port is very close to the Old Town, train and international bus stations.

There's also a taxi ferry from The Riva that'll take you to Trogir and back.
