Best way from Munich to Evian

Can anyone tell us the best mode of transport from Munich to Evian? (train? train/ferry?, etc.) Thanks for your help.

You almost can't get there by rail. The best connection I could find on "bahn.de" required a change of trains in Zurich and a change of trains and stations in Geneva - taking 9 and 1/2hours. Driving will only take you 6 hours. You might want to check into flying from Munich to Geneva.

Thanks. We'll check on flying.

The reference library of a city near you may have the Thomas Cook European Timetable. Tables 75 and 506 show the rail and boat connection. All trains and boats have a buffet. From Lausanne station to the ferry point at Ouchy you can take a bus or taxi.

Munich 0812, Zurich 1227 to 1234, Lausanne station 1454, Lausanne Ouchy lakeside 1515, Evian 1455
Munich 1213, Zurich 1627 to 1634, Lausanne station 1854, Lausanne Ouchy lakeside 1935, Evian 2010
Friday and Saturday only Munich 1353, Zurich 1827 to 2054, Lausanne station 2054, Lausanne Ouchy lakeside 0015, Evian 0050 Saturday and Sunday only

I am interested to see that German Rail did not show this. I think they omit boats.

A thousand thank you's Ben. I thought that was "doable" however didn't know how to find the links. Once again, we really appreciate this info.

Thanks,

Michael

The "bahn.de" website does show ship connections if you type in "Evian les Bains CGN". However, it has you taking another train to Vevey and then catching the boat to Evian there. As the boat goes from Vevey to Lausanne (Ouchy) and then to Evian - traveling on to Vevey doesn't make sense. I have to admit "bahn.de" let me down this time!

Mtthomp77, you already got the answer to you question but for the timetable, you might like to try the following Swiss Railway site (aka SBB).

http://www.cff.ch/pv/index_e.htm

Put Dep.Munich and Arr.Evian. You will be asked to choose Evian or Evian-CGN (CGN is the name of the boat company). Either way, you will get the timetable with the connection Lausanne-Ouchy to Evian by boat. For me this site is the easiest to use.

ps.This site will indicate Lausanne station to Lasuanne-Ouchy is connected by a so called "Metro"(a kind of partially underground cable car in fact) but as Ben suggests, taking a taxi in front of Lausanne station would be much easier unless your luggage is small.

Bonjour Mthomp,

Although you can go to Evian by a combination of rail/ferry, there is not much you can visit from there without a car.

Boats ply from Evian to Thonon, Yvoire, Nyon, Coppel, and Geneva in one direction, and to Veyvey-Marche, Montreaux, Territet, Chateau de Chillon, Villeneauve, Bouveret and St Gingolph in the other. Geneva has rail connections to France, and Montreaux has themto Sion, Brigue, and Milan. Across the lake, Lausanne has trains by day to much of Switzerland, and overnight to Rome and Venice.

Oppose global warming: keep your car in the garage.
