Best way from Amalfi to Siena?
 

We'd like to figure out the quickest way to get between these two places as cheaply as possible.

If my fiance and I take a flight from Naples to Florence, it will still take 4 hours (including a lay over in Rome). Add to that the cost and time for taxi/buse rides from Amalfi to Naples and Florence to Siena. We're looking at $500 dollars for the plane tickets plus the additional cost for taxi/bus rides.

Would it be feasible to rent a car for one trip? If not, how long would a train ride take?

All the suggestions that came up for me involved two changes of train and approx. 7 hours of travel from Salerno (you'd have to get there from Amalfi) to Siena. The cost was 56 Euro per person in 1st class and 41 Euro in 2nd.

If you decide to take the train, I would suggest that you choose one that includes a Eurostar from Salerno to Roma Termini.

We drove from Siena to Positano and it was about a 5 hour drive from what I recall. (And Positano is slightly closer to Siena). It's not a particularly scenic drive on the Autostrada, but this may be the fastest way. The lenght of time also depends on when you travel. We went in October so we did not face traffic on the Amalfi drive but going at a peak time could mean sitting for hours!

www.trenitalia.it seems to be the best solution for you, since you will travel comfortably on EuroStar trains, and if leaving from Naples, in most cases you'd have to change only once(maybe in Florence). Trains from Naples are more frequent than from Salerno, and you would roughly save a little more than an hour train-ride if you leave from Naples rather than from Salerno(check trenitalia for confirmation).

I think the least expensive and most friendly way would be to take the ferry from Amalfi to Salerno.

The train station is about 3 blk NW of the ferry dock.

Then take the train to Siena via Rome and Chiusi.

I don't have the ferry schedule from Amalfi, but here it is for Positano to Salerno via Amalfi. It's about 20 min from P to A.

Positano - Salerno (P.zza della Concordia): 5 E 70 min
10,00 – 11,30 – 13,30 – 15,40 – 17,15

You will be able to get the 13:42 ES* to Rome, and will arrive in Siena at about 19:50.
