Best waffles and frites in Waterloo
As the title suggests, I will be in Belgium and I wanting to know a good place for waffles and fries in Waterloo. It does not have to be the same place.
Waterloo. Not Brussles. Not Bruges. Not Liege. Not Antwerp. Waterloo. Well, I might consider Brussels since it's close but I would really, <b>REALLY</b> prefer Waterloo + 5km. Let's see what you got. |
So...are Genval, La Hulpe and Rixensart acceptable alternatives to Waterloo? What about Fort Jaco or St. Job?
|
As I said, I'd like to keep it within 5km. If that's not feasible then I'll head out further, perhaps out into Brussels.

Sparkchaser:
I spent a year in Waterloo one day. Not to be utterly facetious, I took the proper bus from Brussels (but there is a train that's half the time of the bus ride)..told my wife I'd be back in a few hours...From where the bus stopped in Braine, had to take a cab ride to get to the fields..took in the battlefield and it's pyramid-like Butte di Lion and meandered about...I took a taxi back to the bus stop, but it was a Sunday bus schedule and there wasn't any transportation back into Brussels for nearly two hours. Those were the pre-cell-phone days....so poor wife had to cool her heels waiting for the man who never showed up..until much later than planned. Must admit, being a student of Euro history mainly for my writing pursuits, I enjoyed just being at the Waterloo fields (caught a glimpse of Marshal Ney on horseback, who loked pretty good for his age). In the town of Braine I did find a little cafe across from the Brussels bus stop that offered very tasty waffles and fries...but I don't recall the name. Be sure to check any bus or train schedules in the vicinity closer than I did...(the bus ride was quite scenic, going through villages and forests with upscale country homes along the way). |
Thanks for the information, tower. I will look for that cafe.
We're only going to be in Waterloo long enough to see the battlefield and Butte di Lion and the next morning we will be headed back to Germany. |
"a good place for waffles and fries"
What would constitute a 'good place'? What kind of waffles? ie. Brussels waffles, Liege waffles, or stroopwafel? Fries with or without mayonnaise? If with mayonnaise, homemade or do you prefer Calve or Remia brand? |
<i>What would constitute a 'good place'? </i>
A place that one would recommend because of a tasty meal. <i>What kind of waffles? ie. Brussels waffles, Liege waffles, or stroopwafel?</i> Brussels for me, Liege for Mrs. Sparkchaser. <i>Fries with or without mayonnaise? If with mayonnaise, homemade or do you prefer Calve or Remia brand?</i> I like mine plain and the missus kinda randomly picks. Sounds like you have a multitude of suggestions based on the questions. I had no idea there were so many choices in the Waterloo area. Lay 'em on me -- my body is ready! :D If it helps, you can suggest both a waffle place and a frites place. |
Waffles and fries are basically what I would call street food and fast food. Neither is haute cuisine.
If I am in Belgium and want a waffle what I do is simply look for the street vendor with the longest line at lunch time. Or you can go to a restaurant and they'll dress them up for more money and put them on a plate. A question of authentic or tourist money maker. 'Guafres' (waffles) are for eating on the street. For fries, look for the busiest 'friterie'. Again, this is fast food, not fine dining. What you should try is a 'mitraillette'. https://www.google.ca/search?q=mitra...w=1280&bih=687 If that doesn't appeal, then forget the whole thing and go for a nice lunch in the Emperor's Bivouac. They probably have waffles and fries if anyone just has to have them. |
gaufres, not guafres
|
No offense, dulciusexasperis but you didn't tell me anything I didn't already know. I am looking for specific places to go, as in places that a Fodorite has been and would recommend to fellow travelers as tower was kind enough to do.

Well, if you are willing to travel over to La Hulpe (an easy drive from Waterloo and a charming small town), the bistro at the Folon Fondation on the grounds of the Chateau de la Hulpe has good waffles (and crepes). They're pretty easy to do, you should be able to find them almost anywhere and there won't (or shouldn't be) a huge difference in quality.
http://www.fondationfolon.be/ For frites, aside from any friterie with a line, we always liked the frites at Canterbury's in Ixelles. They have waffles as well. http://lecanterbury.be/menu/ |
WeisserTee, vielen Dank! :D
|
Closer to Waterloo, in fact on the Chaussee de Waterloo, a straight shot down from Waterloo, is Jacos in Uccle. We used to go there all the time. It's a neighbourhood joint. They had good frites and gaufres when we were there last, but it's been a while, so don't know if they still do.

Are not stroopwafels a Dutch speciality?
If you want a restaurant try this.https://www.facebook.com/pages/Le-bi...83526835051075 There is no website so it seems. |
and "Vielen Dank" is German, not Dutch/Flemish. Try "hartelijk bedankt"
|
but the OP lives on Germany....so I'd let that slide
|
WeisserTee, you rock! If we ever cross paths, beers are on me. ((B)) ((B))
ribeirasacra, WeisserTee lives in Switzerland and has a German moniker; therefore, my thanks were in German. Problem? <i>Are not stroopwafels a Dutch speciality?</i> I dunno -- you're the one that mentioned stroopwafels, not me. I am not interested in eating them. If I were interested, I could get them at the Rewe or Edeka in my town. |
Dammit. I am sorry, ribeirasacra. I confused you with dulciusexasperis.
Ignore me :p This joint needs an edit function! |
Stroopwafels can be found in the Netherlands AND in Belgium but yes they originated in the Netherlands.
Besides, Brussels, Liege and stroopwafels there are many other local recipes. http://www.gaufresbelges.com/ |

"therefore, my thanks were in German. Problem?" Find out when you are in Belgium!!!
That link to gaufesbelgus is begin block by the malwearbytes programme on my PC may be something not right in its HTML/script. I have never seen stroopwafels begin offered in French speaking part of Belgium. I know the French speaking side do not like the Flemish speakers much, but I wonder if this is going too far? ;-) |
I once asked a guy in Brugge for some directions. I spoke in French and he replied in English. Something like, 'why would you assume you should speak to me in French? You should first ask if I speak French or Flemish. I speak Flemish and would rather speak to you in English if you can't speak Flemish. Not everyone here wants to hear French.'
Then he gave me the directions, so obviously he understood what I had asked him in French. So it seems some will take it very far indeed ribeirasacra. The same thing can be found in Quebec, Canada where some French Canadians who understand English perfectly will refuse to speak to you in English. |
Brugge is a Flemish town. Flemish people generally prefer to speak English to someone who is a not a native French speaker. They can probably speak French too, but will object to someone assuming that everyone in Flanders speaks French.
As for waffles; there's also the Lacquemant waffle; a thin warm waffle with a sugary syrup. They look more like stroopwafels. |
Dulci the Class Contrarian...everyone is duly impressed with your wide knowledge of waffles and fries. Your newest claim to fame...Now go home.
|
Tower, are you confusing me with someone who cares about what you have to say?
|
From Merriam-Webster:
Waffle - intransitive verb: to talk or write a lot without saying anything important or interesting. |
"therefore, my thanks were in German. Problem?" Find out when you are in Belgium!!!"
Oh come on. Don't be so feeksachtig. I'm pretty sure Sparkchaser was not planning to speak German in Brugge. FWIW, in my few dozen trips to Brugge, I never spoke French and when I tried Flemish (mostly picked up from subtitled episodes of The Simpsons on VT4 or from Patrouille, my favorite reality cop show), the locals would play along briefly then switch to English. |
