best vendor for car rental in europe

i will soon start booking our rental car for pick up in avignon and drop off at nice. i am looking at kemwel, autoeurope and the individual sites for the major rental cos. (hertz, avis, etc ) any advice on who's best for 1. good rates 2. convenient pick up and drop off locations 3. no drop off charges,

BTW, is it worth getting the add'l optional insurance considering auto burglary in france?

I have never heard of any company assessing a drop charge for returning a car in the same country, as you propose.

Best wishes,

Rex

Rex, I think you could have a drop off charge if it is different from where you originate. The two mentioned in the OP are pretty large places though so there might not be one.
I think AutoEurope is the best for good rates. They will match any lower rate.

Auto Europe gives excellent service. No drop off charges within the same country. If you find a better rate by contacting an individual company, Auto Europe promises to either match it or beat it. If you travel light enough so all your luggage can be concealed in the trunk and you leave nothing visible inside the car, then skip the optional insurance.

I always find that Nova in northern Ireland has the best rates; they have good service too.

Sometimes there is a drop-off charge if you pick a car up from a "Franchise" that is not actually owned by the rental company. In '02 we picked up a car in Biarritz, France that was a Europcar franchise, and dropped it in Avignon, France. There was a 100E or so drop-off charge.

This was the only drop-off I've ever encountered when renting & returning a car in the same country (we've rented over 30 cars in Europe).

There was a recent & very long thread about added insurance - click on my name & try to find it.

We've never had a drop off charge within the same country in Europe, but I suppose there could be special circumstances in some cases.

There shouldn't be any drop off charges in the same country, but between countries is very expensive. We have recently been quoted (Avis) pickup Nice drop off Florence
437 euros. Consequently we have made other plans!

You can find out EXACTLY what tolls will cost by consulting 'Viamichelin.com', the best site for information about driving around France and Europe. It will also give you all the other information you will need, including the time the trip will take, and where the radar traps are currently located! It's a beauty, and free.
