Best Upscale Hotel in London ...
... preferably not too large. I loved the Savoy several years ago but I gather it's gone down hill.

Connaught . . . will start at about 250 GBP. Great restuarants and extremely classy high tea (at least in Jan, 2000).

The Charlotte Street Hotel has a great location, its website shows some spectacular rooms, and its clearly upscale.....
OTOH, it's going to charge upscale rates likely above 300 GBP's.
Best wishes.

Claridge's or the Lanesborough.

Don't forget the Dorchester. Haven't been there in a few years but it certainly belongs amongst this group. Also has a lovely tea.

We have enjoyed our time staying at the St. James Club. First class service without all the hotel trappings. They have a web site at www.stjamesclub.co.uk

One Aldwych. More of a contemporary boutique hotel. I agree the Savoy has gone downhill in the last years although I think they are in the process of renovation.

Kat- I had suggested the Dorchester but just remembered I saw an article in Travel & Leisure magazine (I think it was Oct. 2002) that mentioned a number of new upscale boutique hotels in London. Maybe you can check it out.
