Best travel route to southern Tuscany?

We will be flying in from NYC. Can you recommend the best city to fly into in Italy? Should we fly to Florence? Or Rome and then a train? Or Milan and a train?

Thanks!

Florence is closest and a smaller airport, Rome or Milan would also work fine if you can get a better fare or flight schedule.

Quite possibly your Florence flight is a connection from Rome or Milan anyway -- if you have a long layover, just take the train, don't sit jet-lagged in the airport.

(Upon rereading your title.) Actually, Milan might be too far away from southern Tuscany to be convenient.

I assume that you will have a rental car. Flying to Florence is easily your best option. The drive from the airport is easy and getting out of the airport is fast.
I've done both.
If you will not have a car (southern Tuscany without a car "does not compute" in my mind),It's a bit of a toss-up. Where are you staying?

We found that flying into Pisa instead of Florence offered better availability. The larger Pisa airport, versus the smaller Florence airport, handles more international flights. There is direct train link or bus link into Florence from the Pisa airport.

JFK to Pisa on Delta is a great option.
