Best travel guidebooks for Germany?

Hubby and I will be traveling next month to Prague for 3 days and then will be taking the train to Dresden where we will stay one night, then continue on the train to Berlin, where we will spend 3 nights, and end up in Hamburg for another 2 nights. As a newbie in Germany, I am wondering what guidebooks would be most recommended? Thanks in advance for your assistance!

Hello margot55 :)

While we use several guidebooks for planning, the Michelin Green Guide is the only one we carry with us. Main attractions are given 1, 2, or 3 stars. The included maps give good driving routes and show locations of the highlights.

Happy travels!

I always use Lonely Planet. It is geared more towards the train taking, slightly budgeting tourist.

I used the German one for 2 weeks in Germany and never needed a supplemental map or guidebook. I did do some research before to figure out what I wanted to see as they do not rank the attractions like some guidebooks.

I use Michelin Green Guide to plan my trips. DK Eyewitness Guides are also handy for descriptions and pictures of less popular places.

I take Lonely Planet with me. I have a copy that I have butchered so I can extract just the sections that I need, which saves considerable weight. Lonely Planet has handy information like laundromats and book stores as well as sights.

I often use other books including Fodors and Rick Steves' to look for room recommendations. I have a library card.

Thanks everyone - looks like Michelin and Eyewitness get 2 thumbs up! :)

Add my third thumb (if there can be such a thing) for the Michelin Green Guide.

Someone should speak up for the Fodor's guide...

I do use the Fodor's but personally I prefer the Lonely Planet guides.

I bring Frommers and Rick Steves. I also use Eyewitness and Fodors for pre-trip planning and daydreaming.

I love "Frommer's Germany's Best-Loved Driving Tours" but that is no good for someone using the train.
