Best transportation to Southampton for a cruise

We will be going on a 14 day Mediterranean Cruise in May. We will be arriving at Heathrow late Friday evening and need to be in Southampton for a Saturday afternoon departure. I was thinking of staying at the Hilton at Heather Airport. What are the best options for hotel stays as well as how to get to the docks in Southampton. Coming back we want to spend a couple of days in London. Would we be advised to rent a car in Southampton and drive back to London or should we just repeat the original transportation method? Thank you all for your wise travel advice!!

Here's a web site that discusses your options. No direct public transport from Heathrow other than bus. You could get quotes for a car service, it will be around £80-100.

On your return, take a taxi to Southampton rail station and train into London. Do not repeat your trip down as the Southamton trains are direct into Waterloo Station. Compare prices online. Renting a car would, imo, be a huge hassle, probably more costly than the train, particularly if you travel on the train offpeak (departing Southamton after 9:30 am).

Thank you for your prompt reply! It sounds like we would be better served by spending the night in a hotel near Waterloo Station in London. Is that correct? Again, thank you.

Heathrow to Southampton - take the National Express bus/coach. Cheap, quick and easy. www.nationalexpress.com And I think it will take you direct to the port/docks.

Alternatively you can take a bus from Heathrow to Reading station and then a train to Southampton, followed by a taxi to the port, but that will take longer and cost more.

When you return, take the train straight to London.

Well, staying in the Waterloo area the night before is an option. You need to weigh up the prices to get in to London via the Underground (will involve a transfer) or by car service or bus or taxi. If you get in very late, your options will be limited.

I think I would stay at Heathrow and take the bus mid-morning the next day. This should be the least expensive option. I've not used Priceline bidding but many people have "won" 4 star Heathrow hotels at incredibly good rates.

I agree, I'd stay at LHR and take the coach to Southampton. Then on your return take the train from Southampton to Waterloo. IMO it is just too much hassle transferring into Waterloo after your late night arrival.
