We are arriving in Rome at FCO with our three children and need to get to Positano. We have presently rented a car for the duration of our stay. However, for the first week when we are in Positano, we really dont need the car. Is there an easier and more cost effective way to get from Rome to Positano? The train is going to require too many transfers. Otherwise we will just stay with the car rental.

I suggest you taxi from FCO to the Termini station, then train to Naples (2 hours) and meet a driver there to take you to your hotel.

But there are shared ride services from Fiumicino to Positano. This one would be 375 euros for 5 passengers. There are probably others.

Renting a car for the additional week plus paying overnight parking at your Positano hotel would probably cost more than the shuttle, but you can check this yourself. After the time involved renting the car, the drive from Fiumicino would take about 4 hours (or longer if you're going in high season summer). I wouldn't want to do that after an overnight flight.

The shared Positano shuttle costs marginally less than a private transfer. I have used a private service from Positano to FCO for 400 euro and as it wasn't a shuttle, I didn't get dragged around to other people's hotels/destinations.
That is the 'best' way to get from FCO to Positano but as you can see, it is expensive.
The second best way is train to Naples and then a private service which will cost you 120 euro.

If you opt for a splurge/private transfer from FCO, try Tiberlimo.com, based in Rome. We've used them many times, and they will sometimes offer a free trip back to FCO if you are basing in Rome your last night.

If that's way too pricey, do what's suggested above. The fast train to Naples takes 70 minutes, then arrange a private transfer ( about 120-130E) from Naples to your hotel in Positano.

We've used Guemar Travel based in Sorrento for that service, and they were great.

Another option is to take the train to Salerno, and then a ferry to Positano.You'd have to take a train (or taxi) from the airpot to Termini station in Rome and change to the train for Salerno, which is an easy change. In Salerno, it's a short walk from the train station to the ferry dock, but, with luggage and kids, you might prefer a taxi.

Some of the trains to Salerno require a change in Naples, and some of the direct trains are the older and slower InterCity trains. I would suggest getting the 10 AM Frecciarossa or the 10:56 Frecciabianca train to make the trip easier and more pleasant.

I think the train to Naples, followed by the Circumvesuviania and a long bus ride, is altogether too much for a family with small children, especially if it's after an overnight flight.

DH and I just returned last week from Positano. Here's what we did.

We flew into Rome (FCO)and hired a car/driver (Rome Chauffeur) to take us to Rome's train station, Termini (50 euro total). (We do not like taking the Leonardo Express train from the airport to Termini.) From Termini we took a fast train to Naples (just over one hour - 19 euro each, purchased in advance). We had a car/driver (Guemar Travel)meet us at the train station and he drove us to our hotel in Positano (100 euro total). It all worked very well and we would do it again in a heartbeat.
