Best transport please - Amalfi to Catania, Catania to Orvieto
Hi,
Bookings made to arrive in Amalfi on 22nd May next (flight into Rome, train to Salerno, private transfer to our B&B in Amalfi). On 29th May, need to cross to Catania to begin 7 night tour of Sicily. Tour concludes in Taormina and it would seem best idea is to transfer to Catania, fly to Rome (or Naples), then train to Orvieto, where we have booked accommodation for 5 nights. After Orvieto, we have booked an apartment in Rome for 9 days. Have been to Amalfi and Rome - about 8 years ago. Looking forward to return trip.
However, I'm concerned at every warning about flying Alitalia, but not sure of other options. AirOne flights from Catania are also operated by Alitalia.
Train across the Strait and onto Rome/Orvieto is an all day event, which I would like to avoid. Ferry? Can we transfer from Taormina to Salerno for train to Orvieto?
Will be grateful for any suggestions.

There is a daily overnight passenger car ferry between Naples and Catania, which you might consider as an alternative to flying between Naples and Catania, especially if you don't fancy the thought of flying. You avoid the cost of one hotel night by sleeping on the ferry (in a cabin). The crossing takes 10.5 hours, and you arrive in the early morning and get a great view of Mt. Etna.
There is a SITA bus at 15:00 daily except Sundays which will take you from Amalfi to the ferry departure dock in Naples (without changing), for a cheap 3.30 Euros. It's very convenient for passengers taking the overnight ships to Catania, Palermo and the Aeolian Islands.
On the return trip, you could take the bus from Taormina to Catania and then either take the return overnight ferry to Naples, or fly to Rome. From Naples/Rome to Orvieto there is very good train service.

I forgot to mention that there is also daylight and overnight passenger car ferry service between SALERNO and MESSINA, from where you can proceed to Taormina by bus. You might compare the schedules for this ferry to those for the Naples/Catania overnight ferry. This crossing takes 8 hours. I personally don't think the schedules are particularly useful: indeed, this ferry service is designed primarily for freight and big-rigs. But I bring it to your attention nevertheless.
