best town for hiking in the Dolomites

My husband and I will be visiting the Dolomites for a walking holiday in mid September for about 5 days. I am beating myself up trying to decide where to stay. We enjoy full day hikes and are trying to decide between Colfosco, St Christine, Castrelotto or Selva for accommodation. There is a lot of availability in all towns at nice B&B's and I can't decide.

I have read the replies in happyhiker's other thread and I am wondering what the answer would be for the first week of June.

Steve has already told you !

bob:

not exactly because the OP asked about mid-September and Steve's answer factored in which villages would be "dead" at that time. Could be the same or a different answer for early June. I was hoping he would post and indicate whether the answer remained the same at that different time of year.

Bat - Early June is low season too, so my answer would be the same.

Let me know if I can be of more help ...

Thanks Steve and I will take you up on your generous offer of additional help.

So Casterotto and Colfosco will be "pretty quiet"--could you expand on what that means? closed restaurants?

In Ortisei, the number of hotels seems overwhelming. I looked at a number of your past posts but did not see, perhaps missed, hotel(s) recommendations. Would like a "room with a view" and budget is about 200E. If the local restaurants are good, would prefer not to be eating in our hotel evey night so would want easy access to restaurants in the village (ie. no winding mountain road to drive back on at night--definitely want to drink Italian wine with dinner!)

Thanks again.

For other researchers on this question, here is the link to happyhiker's other thread with info on it.

Hi Bat - I haven't stayed in Colfosco, but found Castelrotto a little quiet for my liking (in March) - though that might suite some. Yes, several restaurants were closed.

In Ortisei I usually stay in B&B's as I too prefer to eat out.

Here are two I'd happily return to:

www.hotelvillapark.com
www.snaltnerhof.it

Both are 3* and quite comfortable - but for your budget you might want to look at:

http://www.cavallino-bianco.com/cover.php?la=en

These - and a number of others - are in the village centre, so convenient for a night out without driving.

Most hotels in Ortisei offer pleasant Alpine views. Here's a good place to start:

Hope this helps ...
