Best time to travel to Italy

We are in the beginning stages of planning a trip to Italy. We are able to go at any time but were considering May 2005. Any yays/nays?

From the comments I have read here I would say Spring or Fall is the best. We are planning on going mid-August to Florence, but concerened it is too hot. Any other comments??

THANKS!

Florence is usually very hot in July and August. And, unfortunately, due to its geography, it is generally much more humid than most of Tuscany. But if August is the only time you can go, then you will have to use common sense to cope.

1. Get an air conditioned hotel room. Even if it isn't a great air conditioner, being able to sleep in some comfort at night will help you cope with the heat the next day.

2. Wear light and light colored clothing. Don't worry about looking like a tourist--you'll be running around in the heat while non-tourists are indoors.

3. Drink plenty of fluids, especially water.

4. In the heat of the day, do indoor things (museums and such), or take a siesta in your air conditioned room.

5. Wear a hat, and don't forget the sunblock.

Sumreknot: In my opinion, May is the absolutely best time to travel in Italy. The days are getting longer, it's pleasantly warm but not yet too hot. But please be aware that it is already high season in Italy.

We had a great trip in late September/October and the weather was great. Days still fairly long and the summer tourists were gone. Nice time to see Italy.
