Best time to leave Capri for Naples?

My husband and I are staying a night on Capri after spending 4 nights in Positano this September. From Capri, we will be heading over to Naples to pick up the train to Rome. I was thinking that maybe we could grab lunch in Naples since we can’t get into our apartment in Rome until after 4pm. We would store our luggage at the train station while we check out Naples for a couple of hours. Does that sound like a reasonable plan or is it too much of a hassle to go to the train station, check luggage, then head back out for such a short time?

My big question is when should we plan to leave Capri? We’ve never been, so I envision us at the port trying to catch the ferry out while all the mobs of day trippers are getting off their ferries at the same time. I don’t want to leave on the first ferry out, as I’d like to enjoy breakfast without being rushed, but what would be a good time to leave the island? The earlier the better, I guess? Or maybe I forego lunch in Naples and stay on Capri longer…

Maybe I am just getting worried for nothing, but I appreciate any help you can offer!

Most visitors are arriving in Capri in the morning and leaving late afternoon.

What times are the trains leaving Naples?

I was looking at the faster trains that are roughly 1 1/2 hours. I was thinking of taking the 1:48 train, which puts me into Rome at 3:15.

sherhatfield,

hi

we're doing something similar, but need to catch a ferry in the evening in naples. (we're also spending one night on capri after a few in positano!)

i was wondering if you've been able to find a current ferry timetable on line (capri to naples). it seems that if you leave capri in the morning, you'll have time for some pizza near the train station.

we're also not sure if we'll want to make the most of our day in Capri or get a little "taste" of naples...

have a great trip!

The gabage situation in Naples might be improved in September; if not, it won't be very pleasant to hang around Naples train staion as I did in this past February. Perhaps you might like to spend more time in Capri.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

dina- good luck with your planning! Steve posted the same link that I've been using, so as you can see there are plenty of options!

Judy - good point about the garbage situation. I'll have to keep an eye on that as my trip gets closer.
