As you can guess, the most sunny days are in the summer, but for more moderate temps and not too much rain, and certainly lesser crowds, I think late Sept-early October is great.

Marykay, I went to Rome and Florence in early October and it was great. Rome was still quite warm, actually hot, but that might have been unseasonable. Florence was cool in the mornings and evenings and warm during the day. I wore short sleeves my entire stay in Rome and traveled with a light jacket that I took off during the day in Florence.

Sicily was marvellous in February if you want something fairly soon - cheap and not generally crowded but a festa in Agrigento at end of second week. If you are interested e-mail me and I will send you a folder of notes I made.

My husband and I visited Italy early may, 2001. Had sunny weather every city from Rome north. Just missed rain in Florence by a week. Average temperature was 73 degrees. Would definitely recommend May!!
