to see it from the outside, looking over granada, definitely the best time is evening around sunset. there is a beautiful pink tint to the stone that shows up beautifully at sunset. Go to the mirador square on the hills across from the alhambra and watch the sunset while the gypsies play music. fabulous. To see the inside I would suggest either early morning or evening, to avoid the heat. There is a fair amount of walking involved, much of it outside so to enjoy it properly go when it is cooler. You probably know that you can book tickets online in advance and if you are going at a busy time of year or at the weekend you should certainly do this to avoid disappointment. Access to the royal palace within the complex is limited and when you buy your ticket you are allotted a particular time slot to see the royal palace. If you have limited time in Granada you need to make sure you book in advance or you may find the tickets are already sold out for the time you want when you get there.

If you haven't been before I would try late afternoon as the coach tours will be starting to subside and it is only during the day that you can visit the whole site.

However, visiting in the evening is incomparably better. It is wonderfully peaceful and a truly magical place because it is so quiet. But you only get to see part of the site.

If you can - do both.

If you are staying in Granada, try to stay at a hotel on the Alhambra grounds. That way, you can see it at night and tour it early in the morning while it is cool and before the crowds arrive. I also recommend a restaurant in the Albacin with a wonderful view of the illuminated Alhambra - the Mirador de Moryama.

I think it may depend on the time of year.

I'm tempted to be funny and say that anytime is a good time to see the Alhambra....
But, in all seriousness, I think it is best to tour the buildings and gardens during the day, preferably morning, and then return in the evening, for a completely different, magical experience. I think it is only open on certain nights, so you need to check that in advance to avoid disappointment. I envy you the opportunity to see it for the first time!
