Best time for hiking in Switzerland - when would you choose?

Hi all. If you could visit Switzerland (Berner Oberland/Grindelwald region) any time between May and Sept., which time frame would choose for good hiking/sunny weather?

I have looked at a website that shows the weather history, but I don't think it was accurate. For the 2nd week in Sept., it indicated one would have 5% chance of cloudy day, based on the historical record. But, when I check to see what the record showed, there were many days noted with Fog or Fog/Rain. (I would assume those types of days are cloudy?)

Anyway, I thought I would get feedback from all you good people here on when you would choose to go.

Hi karens,

I would go in September. June-early September will have too many crowds milling aobut. May is generally considered mud month, and some cable cars close for maintenance.

Have fun!

Mid/late June for wildflowers, late September/early October for foliage.

June, as Ingo said. I hate August/September hiking and outdoor activities for one reason: wasps. You can't relax at an outside cafe during daylight hours without a wasp (usually more than one) trying to check out your food or drink. Especially if you're in a rural village with farms nearby. In June, it's honeybees and bumble bees, they're fine.

laurela an joannyc - let me know a little about your trips.

The reason I'm a bit concerned is b/c on our last trip to Switzerland a few years ago (in July) it rained heavily 2 of the 3 days we were there. I understand this is not uncommon for Switzerland in the summer, and was wondering if it's typically a bit less rainy in the Fall.

I always travel from Sept 20-somethingth (the Thursday of that week) until October 10th (or that Sunday or Monday).

Sometimes there is a bit of rain, other times there is an abundance of sunshine and warmth (even too hot!) Haven't been to Switzerland yet (leaving 9/22) but looking forward to an excellent trip and hoping for excellent weather! But, will bring a raincoat and umbrella just in case.
