Best time for airfares to Europe?
Planning a trip to Prague for late September. When is the optimum time to look for the best airfares for this destination? I'm always afraid of buying a ticket too early and paying too much, or waiting too late and not being able to get a ticket at all (except at premium+ rates).

Late September should be okay, but there are some good deals to Europe at that time right now. I can find numerous carriers NYC-London for ~$400 for Mon-Wed travel in September (even less on Kuwait Airways). easyjet and bmibaby are two discount carriers that fly London (Gatwick or Stansted) - Prague.
While you may find similar deals, I doubt prices will go down much if at all for Sept.
It probably will cost more from cities other than NYC, and it may cost more by getting a direct ticket to Prague or may not. Just giving you some ideas.

Keep your ear to the ground at the cheap Flights forum on www.eurotrip.com also.
Whatever Don (the moderator there) says to do, consider yourself lucky to listen.
Best wishes,
Rex

The alternative would be to find a cheap flight to London (plenty of those), and then take a low cost carrier to Prague. This could very likely be done for less than $400 (rkkwan's found price), but if you want to save time & fly direct, or keep the same carrier, then $400 is not bad. Fuel prices are supposed to keep going up, so who knows what will happen by fall.

Ira is so right. I started checking fares on flights to Paris last spring (someone told me it would be around $1000 and I didn't believe them). My searches kept coming up at aroung $900. Then one day in mid-July I found $547 and snatched it!

United has a sale on right now even this is not a "good time" to usually buy air tickets for Europe.
Either look every day until you find something you can live with, call a consolidator, or get one of the services of Expedia to "automatically" check for you.
Interestingly, you have not told us the fares you may have already come up with..is there a particular reason for that omission?

Strongly agree that there is no "optimum time". If there were, then everyone would try then (and drive the price up). It's not unlike the stock market: you just don't know if the next day will go up or down. As sugested, look constanly - if you see a price you feel comfortable with GRAB IT. It may NEVER go lower (though, then again it might.....)
