Early September/early October in Iceland

Hi,

My husband and I are planning a week trip to Iceland. We are seeing good flight deals for early September (6 sept-13 sept) and early October(5 oct-12 oct). We want to take the best chance to see Northern lights and avoid too much crowd. Which of these dates (early september vs early october) do you think would be better to catch northern lights and south/west of Iceland. I don't think we'll be going to north/east of Iceland. We'll be in/around south and west region maybe. Our day itinerary is not planned yet, but we want to finalize the dates/flights first and asap. Suggestions welcome!
