Best steak in Paris
 

visiting Paris in november,being a red meat man myself,I was wondering where can I get the best steak and frite in Paris..

Hi Joseph: <BR>Being a steak eater myself, I found my choices were limited in Paris. Though a chain of restaurants called Hippopotamus (sp) was pretty decent for a ribeye and frites. Have a great trip!!

We just returned from Paris in August. We also ate at Hippopatamus...it was ok; very affordable ($14 included steak dinner, salad or veg, drink and dessert). The best steak we had was at a Brasserie called Chez Francis with a great night time view of the Eiffel Tower. It was located adjacent to the Pont de L'Alma (sp?) metro. Loved it!

I'm not a big meat eater, but no vegetarian, and often order steak in Paris. I am very puzzled at love2trvl's comments as France is known for good steaks; just about every restaurant there cooks decent steaks, it's a staple in all cafes, bistros and restaurants. Hippopotamus is a mediocre chain restaurant (I think it's American) where people take kids who won't eat good food; it's where guidebooks advise Americans to take their kids who only want hamburgers, etc. So maybe you can get an adequate cheap steak there, it is cheap, but it's nothing I'd go to. As I said, most good cafes will cook you a good steak if you know what to order and how to have it prepared. I often stay in the Montparnasse area in Paris and am pretty much a regular at the Cafe Rotonde which is my favorite neighborhood cafe--they do make decent cafe dinners IMO at a reasonable price, which is one reason I go there. They fix a good steak, although I always ask for a cut not on the standard menu du jour, but they make it for me happily even though it's not listed--that's just the cut of steak, many cheap cafes will have an "entrecote" steak on the prix fixe menu which I don't like much (it's a ribeye steak, rather dry), so I order a "faux filet" (which is a sirloin and better quality). A very good steakhouse restaurant is Relais de l'Entrecote, there are at least two of them, one in St Germain and one near the Arc de Triomphe.

We second the suggestion of Relais de l'Entrecote. Although I am not a big steak eater, my husband it. We ate there twice and the meal was superb both times. Near the Arc, there were many locals eating at this restaurant. I can't remember who recommended this restaurant to us, but someone on this site did, and we were grateful we took their suggestion.

A third vote for Relais d'Entrecote near Arc. Also, big thumbs up for Le Relais de Venise, at Porte Maillot. Steak frites is literally the only thing on the menu (besides desserts); just tell the waitress how you want it done.

Forgive the intrusion of a Britain on a US site. <BR> <BR>The Hippo chain is all over Paris- very cheap. In fact 3 course with wine was cheaper than I paid for coffee and cake the same day. Packed to the brim every night. Waiters are often English/US students but the food is poor. <BR> <BR>Lots of Brasseries will cook you a good steak, but better if from full menu rather than "fixed price" - cut is smaller. <BR> <BR>My favourite was on Rue de Cambon- just off the Concorde. <BR>
