Jen, think your blanket might have come from the Avoca weavers. They have several shops in Ireland and one near Maam Cross in Connemara. Beautiful things. At the very tip of the Dingle Pen. is Dun Quin pottery. Beautiful things using the colors of Ireland. Down in Shanagarry in Co. Cork is the Pearce factory store--worth a look if you're in the area. Last trip I bought a black cashmere/wool cape which is perfect for night functions in SF. This trip I'm going to look for a celtic design button for the cape! Loads of really good shopping for crafts, weaving, goldsmiths etc. in Dingle Town.

Lorene-your husband will probably want to buy fishing flies (flys?). My brother and my husband's uncle have struck up a trade agreement, where we ferry flies back and forth between the two when we go to Ireland. They both say the flies the other sends over are completely different from anything they'd seen before.

My husband and I are going to be in Shannon area in November. We are going to be starting from Shannon Airport and heading to Limerick then around to Galway along the coast. Any good suggestions of places there to shop? Anyone know if you can get on the Aran Islands in the beginning of Nov??

On my last visit to the Emerald Isle I came back home with a case of the Clap. My wife was none too pleased, but I have fond memories of the experience nonetheless.

An earlier post really caught my eye - little clay/pottery house peat burner -I so wish I had found one of those while in Ireland 5 years ago. I loved the smell of peat burning in the fireplaces and in the air while walking in the countryside near Ennis. I wanted to bottle the aroma and bring it home with me.

Stayed at a BnB on the Dingle a few years ago. Our hostess, Eileen O'Conner was knitting an Aran sweater which she finished while we were there- bought it for $50...great memories...I also have brought back rocks from Micheal Collins birthplace near Clonakilty; from the Dingle (Conor Pass); from Cliffs of Moher; from my ancestor's castle in Inchigeelagh (County Cork)...also Waterford from the factory, and had it signed by artists there...it is cheaper in Ireland...Helen

My favorite souvenir from ireland is a bodhran from Roundstone Musical Instruments in Roundstone, County Galway. The only reason I visited the tiny town was to purchase one, and I just happened to meet the owner of the store who decided to give one to me as a gift. I am still learning to play it, though.

Those little peat burner cottages can be found in loads of tourists gift shops now.

Bill

Bill: I was given three or four web addresses and contacted the stores to find the peat burner cottages but so far have had no luck. Any ideas of where to find them would be MOST appreciated!

My favorite souvenir from my trip to Ireland in September 2000 is definitely the lovely vase I bought from Louis Mulcahy Pottery on Dingle peninsula. Part of the fun was stopping at his shop, midway along the Slea Head drive around the peninsula.

It's art pottery, not cheap, but very subtle and beautiful. My vase is deep swirly tones of blue and green, with flecks of something mica-like. People often comment on it.

Here's a very nice website about the pottery and the various locations in Ireland that sell it (there are several, including a shop in Dublin and I think one in Dingle town).

http://www.louismulcahy.com/index.html

My other favorite souvenir was from Dingle--there is a jewelry store on the western edge of town on the main road past the craft shop complex called Brian de Staic. I bought a silver pendant (you can also get gold, and other types of jewelry) with my name engraved on it in ancient ogham characters--very cool.

Thought this might help everyone looking for those Turf Burning Irish Cottages. Try www.shopirish.com. It's the site of Creative Irish Gifts and the burners are available in their catalog. The price is $29.98.
I agree with the claddagh rings, Beleek,Waterford and Mosse pottery. I also love my History of Ireland pendant and ring from Kilkenny. My favorite souvenirs, however, are the memories of rainbows and misty lakes, kissing the Blarney stone, breakfast at Bewley's and the friendliness of the Irish.
Can't wait to return!
