Most people just say "distributeur."

"Est-ce qu'il y a un distributeur près d'ici?"

Un distributeur qui n’est pas en grève.

StCirq May 30th, 2018 11:57 AM

Distributeur is universally known in France as an ATM machine. They are rarely if ever en grève

When sending money from the US to Europe, you need an IBAN for the European bank, but not for the American bank. The American bank uses a SWIFT code plus account number, which has a correspondence with the IBAN. My US bank charges $50 for the transfer, but there are reasonably-priced international money transfer companies, which will transfer from your bank to an international bank. They charge a small fee (in the order of $3) and they don't have the very best exchange rate, which is how they make their money. For larger amounts, the bank fee may be less costly than the exchange rate spread.

Oh, Stu, you'd be shocked at how many pillars of the community are tax evaders! My husband, an engineer, used to do work for a monastery. The good friars offered to pay him cash under the table and split the VAT savings with him. He told them he couldn't do it. To do so, you'd have to falsify all the building permits and zoning permissions as well, but there are many professionals who are more than happy to do so.

Private doctors in Italy used to routinely quote two prices for a visit. Maybe many of them still do, but if I hear that, I never return to that doctor.

The social acceptability of tax evasion is sharply declining in Italy, fortunately.

We have the same in the US, look at the guy living in the big white house. Nothing new. I would like a no-fee credit card, just don't want to pay the yearly fee so use my no fee debit card to pull cash. I also have a debit card in one bank that I keep a low amount of cash to use in case of card skimming which we have a major problem in Florida. The other debit card I use only at atm machines. I normally come home without any credit card debt.

I believe the original poster said he is going on a tour. No need to pay tolls on the autoroute, no gites or apartments demanding cash. All he is asking is whether he can use credit cards instead of cash in restaurants, and of course he can. He just wants a bit of cash for incidentals, so even in the unlikely event of a strike or other ATM emergency, he would not be left in dire straits.

Nikki, we really go off topic fast. You are of course correct.

You sound like my husband.

And not for the first time.
