I didn't know this about Italy, I have never attempted a train trip there without an implicit reservation (the last time was a night train to Germany where the seats got pulled out into 'beds'). But certainly with other train networks, reservation is separate. Apologies if I was miselading.

You've received lots of good advice. I will only add, that you have a fairly complex itinerary which you are still sussing out.

I would start another thread on the subject of your itinerary. At first reading, the one part of it that I would think hard about is Weggis.

Italy, Switzerland, and then Paris. Lovely, but it is a lot.

That plus your being a family of four makes me speak up to say: Make it easy on yourself and try to stick to places on main train lines.

Weggis isn't on a main train line, and aside from having to book a cab (for four people and luggage, late at night) on the day of arrival, you would have extra changes of train on the day you go to Paris. On that day, you will likely be trying to connect up with the high speed "Lyria" train departing Zurich - Paris (or Basel-Paris). Grabbing baggage and herding two young kids through stations to the correct platform - possibly with only a few minutes to do it all in - is not likely to be a low stress experience. Remember, you must be on board before the official posted leaving time as the train will not wait for you. And, you need to find seats, stow your main bags, etc. etc.

Staying in Lucerne would simplify things a lot and you can always do a day trip from there to Weggis.

Okay, that was my two, more like four, cents. ;)

Good to know about the pass and the fee. If you are not using a pass then there is no reservation fee. Certainly another factor to consider.

Update: It looks like we can get a 3-day Swiss travel pass for around 625CHF that would cover our boat rides from Weggis>Lucerne, and our cable car rides to/from Mt Rigi. As a result, it would also cover Arth-Goldhau>Bern>Arth Goldhau.

That's a lot of money for three days. You really need to crunch the numbers if you haven't already - you could well do better buying point to point.

If you're staying in Lucerne overnight, don't forget that you're entitled to a guest card.

The Visitor Card gives over night guests free use of buses and trains within zone 10 of the city network, as well as a range of discounts for cableways, mountain railways, museums and excursions in the Lucerne-Lake Lucerne Region.

Also, 20% reduction on the Rigi Bahnen, amongst other discounts.
