When choosing shoes I would also check what kind of sole they have, some shoes have a smooth sole and can be slippery when the cobblestones are wet.

Man wasn't meant to wear heels, it is natural to walk on flat feet, it isn't harmful nor does it "pull" on your muscles unless something is wrong with your legs. I never wear heels (except for rare dressup occasions, which is only a couple times a year) and almost always wear flat shoes when walking a lot when traveling. The most important thing is a thick enough sole so you have cushioning, I think. Of course that would not be ballerina flats which are dress shoes, you'd have to be nuts to think those flimsy things are walking shoes.

I just buy a variety of shoes when I find one that fits well in my size, but the thing in common is a good sole that cushions your feet. I like Ecco, for one, but also have good Naturilizers and even some that are cheaper things. I wear Merrells a lot, also, and they are totally flat (sneaker type things. Of course, I have some athletic/running shoes I wear when doing sports but I don't usually take them on a trip unless a lot of light hiking is planned or it's a less urban location.

There is a way to tell what height heel is best for you.My orthopedic surgeon showed this to me. It takes 2 people or if you are double joint maybe you could do it yourself!

Extend your foot, place a piecoe of string or a tape measure or whatever will drop down the length of your foot on your large toe. Keep foot relaxed. Then measure the distance from your heel to the string. That is the best heel height for you.

Our family went to Prague where there are cobblestone streets everywhere! All our feet would hurt after a full day of walking. We all wore flat shoes for most of the time. I would go with the standard tennis or running shoe because even flip flops that I thought were extremely comfortable were causing me problems after a long day.

Normally I would never post on a thread about shoes and cobblestones, but in this case I just have to.

How in the world do women in Rome walk around wearing 4 inch spiked heels on the cobblestones? Not only do they do this like they are walking down a runway, but without a care in the world.

I, on the other hand, wearing my sneakers and at times carrying an umbrella, will often stumble or get the tip of the umbrella stuck. Ok, so I'm a klutz.
