Best Season to Travel to Italy

I know heat and high tourist season are in June/July/August but I'm wondering if my original thought of going in Septeber puts us too late in the season weather wise. We don't neccessarily want to travel in the rain.

I would recommend March or April. The weather is generally beautiful, a little on the cool side, and there are a lot fewer tourists.

I have done October a few times and it was WONDERFUL. Halfpint

Rome was mobbed last week as was Venice last year at the same time. Hordes of tour groups everywhere.

My favorite season is late September to late October. Second best - late April to late May.

We were in Italy for 2 weeks in mid-May and it was beautiful. A few years ago, we went in early Oct. for 2 weeks and the weather was delightful.

May is best in south Italy---the flowers are reason enough. You are not too late until Nov.

sept or oct aare the 2 best months to travel in-my opinion based on many trips to italy

I'm with StCirq. The year I lived there, though, it was cold until mid-May, then got HOT---there was no spring whatsoever, we went right from winter to sultry summer. I've had great times there Sept-Oct, although in Rome last Sept there were a few very cool rainy days.

The only times I'd stamp my foot and refuse to go would be July & August because I simply can't take that much heat and humidity.

Early May was a wonderful time to be in Italy this year. Only rain was May 5 the first day we arrived in Rome. Also visited the Amalfi Coast, Florence and Venice where we had perfect weather.
Have gone to Rome in Jan. and found it wonderful as far as getting into places without the lines. Cold, but sunny weather when we were there 2 years ago.

Hello galelstorm,
We've taken one week trips in May, June, September, and October. We encountered ideal weather every time. I wouldn't second-guess your September decision. Happy planning!
